I always thought the song was about harming yourself and drug addiction.. He talked about hurting himself today, to see if he still feels the pain. He focuses on the pain, the only thing that's real. Although the song is dark, I think it generalizes suicide. Or, you could be describing the helpless flickers of Hope you might feel when you suffer severe depression and sadness. And of course the sadness of your dear friends who proceeded before you. Although people think Johnny Cash might have written the song, the original was written for nine inch nails. The only thing I'm certain about is the song being written for nine inch nails and not being a Johnny Cash original.
