The newest ships the navy is putting out are all electric drive motors with big diesel or nuclear generators. They put out a lot of electrical power. Since it takes about 8 times as much power to double your speed on a ship, all they have to do is slow down a bit and they can keep firing until they run out of projectiles. They are designing ships to handle the electric load of weapons like this and high powered lasers.

0.5 MV^2. We don't necessarily have to make the projectile heavier to be more effective, faster works too.
