On July 30 1942, the WAVES were established.
The name was an acronym for “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” (as well as an allusion to ocean waves). Their official name became the U.S. Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve), but the nickname “WAVES” stuck. The word “emergency” in WAVES implied that the acceptance of women was due to the unusual circumstances of World War II, and at the end of the war the women would not be allowed to continue in Navy careers, but it or its successors continued for decades afterwards.
On June 12, 1948, women gained permanent status in the armed services of the United States!!

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel, eleven months later (1JUL43), my father entered the Navy’s V-12 program as a Seaman Apprentice at Tulane University in New Orleans. In early March of ‘44, he entered Midshipman School in NYC, and was commissioned on 29JUN44.
This was one of the standard methods the Navy used for training officers during WWII. As bad as the services needed personnel, I’ve often wondered why the training lasted so long.
By the way, he never mentioned meeting any WAVES!
