A few years ago here in Edmonton, I met an American named Bill Brown who served in the Battle of the Bulge.
I happened to met him at Tim Horton's coffee shop. He was a Texan who served with the 75th Infantry Division. He and his unit were sent to the front lines. He did not believe that I belong to the same division as his. The 75th Division eventually became to 75th training Command of United States Army Reserve.
Bill Brown was a telephone lineman. He remembers German mortar shells landing near his position. Because of the snow and ice ,the shells would explode in the ice and this prevented shrapnel from flying too far.
His unit fought the Battle of the Bulge, later He witnessed the Thousands of guns of American artillery on crossing the Rhine Going into the heartland of Germany in March of 1945. His unit eventually went to a ski resort in Austria or Germany.
He eventually went back home to the USA and was going to go to Japan to fight some more.. But the war ended because of the dropping of the 2 atomic bombs on Japan.
Bill Brown passed away in 2019.
