I don't buy that this really hurts the airline on not selling seats. All the empty seats were paid for. The leg they do have to stand on is that it is in the contract language when the person purchased the ticket.

That and when the person doesn't show for theflight, they rebook a standby and get that money too.

Airlines supposedly discount ticket for flights with multiple stops and they feel that this is gaming the system. I partly sympathize, but don't completely based on lower quality service from US carriers compared to international competitors.
