We are not a Democracy. The United States is not "a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives..." Supreme power lies within the Constitution and the Constitution cannot be altered by a simple majority vote of the people and/or their elected representatives. It takes an overwhelming consensus, defined as a 2/3rds majority.

You didn't read any of that stuff did you? You just looked at the title and made a snap post.

A Representative Democracy is composed of elected officials who are elected by a popular majority vote. They only serve a certain number of years per term and have to go up for re-election.

We are a Republic because those elected officials then vote on laws based on the consensus you stated. We are also a Republic because each state is a county of it's own with it's own representation that come together as a bigger nation.

Both of those statements are true about our form of government. Therefore we are BOTH a Republic AND a Representative Democracy and NOT a full fledged Republic or Democracy. There are many other things besides what I wrote that make us both.

Cpl Tom Surdi - I read every bit of it. If I cannot read a link because of subscription requirements, I say so. If I will not read it because it is Facebook, I say so. You don't even recognize that the quote I pulled is from that "stuff" you think I didn't read.

All though we elect our representatives through a democratic process, application of the term democracy to our form of government is NOT accurate. Words have meaning.

Democracy - control of an organization or group by the majority of its members.

As an example -- 66 yea votes in the Senate and 289 yea votes in the House of Representatives (both results 2/3 minus 1) does not pass a law over a Presidential veto.

The majority of both houses in this case does not have control of the the nation.

I can, if necessary, show a hypothetical where a the majority of the desires of the population is not reflected by the majority of the Senate, regardless of how that desire is reflected in the House of Representatives, and once again... the majority does not have control of the nation.

That the United States is not a democracy is not an accident, nor an oversight. It is inaccurate and misleading to call it so.

If we are not a republic then the Pledge of Allegence is bogus, right!
