That's why having self-defense insurance is extremely important, because even if you are in the right, they can still bankrupt you with legal costs.

From a NC Concealed Carry Permit holder, the article is right on, if not barely scratching the surface.
Once someone unlawfully crosses your home's (or vehicles' or business') threshold, they become fair game for the use of deadly force. However, any invaders still able to retreat, who do begin to retreat, cannot be (re-) engaged with deadly force. You cannot shoot someone who ceases to be a threat (by retreating). You either let them go, or use less-lethal force commensurate with Escalation of Force (EoF) spectrum to subdue them for law enforcement.
