I've got one of those flags, which my late father brought back from the Pacific in WWII. The cotton flag is in good shape - no moth holes - and the Kanji writing on it is pretty clear. Dad was in the HqCo of the 123rd Infantry Regt, 33rd Division, in New Guinea and the Philippines. Since he would not talk about his wartime combat experiences, I don't know when or where he got the flag, but I presume it was off a dead Japnese soldier. Dad kept the flag in a drawer all those years, and I got it as part of my inheritance, along with his medals and badges. He also passed to me another Japanese flag, this one inscribed with the names of every member of his company. Like the other flag, it is in very good condition. I've often wondered how to attempt to return the first flag, possibly to surviving relatives, and the second flag may get donated to the Museum of the U.S. Army when I pass. I've got kids, but they aren't much interested in that sort of thing. Now I've got an idea what to do with the first flag. Great article!

Talk about forgiveness, honor and coming around full circle. I'm glad that the family got the flag back.
