Thank you this clarification. While there is still some softening of the rules of the exam it is not nearly as bad as it had first appeared. It seems the teacher made the best out of a bad situation.

What I read originally is that a professor allow students to not take the midterm. This appears true.

So what I see here is debunking the rumor that it was more widespread. But, I also see it a a veiled attempt to make it less than it was. At least on the basis of the headline.
