COL Mikel J. Burroughs, I personally believe that the creation of NATO was one of the smartest moves that we ever made. I do not agree with every decision that they make, true enough, but there is an undeniable advantage to having allies in so many other countries. We can address situations anywhere in the world within reasonable time, and we have "enemies of enemies" to back us up if it comes to that.

NATO needs to stay and so do we. As the saying goes, "those who do not know history are bound to repeat it" so mote it be that we should learn from past mistakes. If we relieve our generals who believe that moving out of a country, once we have established some security, is the WORST answer to maintain future events we are asking for future problems. The BEST avenue of approach to maintain the sovereign dignities of those countries who initially asked for our help is to help them see what WILL and HAVE happened when we leave too suddenly because of pressures from politicians. Do politicians serve a purpose in this equation? Yes. If the military fails to prosecute the gains from which it is commanded...yes...but even then...leave the generalship piece to the generals...and politicians can learn also from studying their history.
