Let's assume the details are accurate (heck, they might be). Set aside the fact that I would NEVER call an assemblage of flag officers and senior defense staffers "dopes and babies"...and I can't say I entirely disagree with the gist of what the President is accused of saying (if not the manner in which he may have said it). Absolutely, the US has been bearing the brunt of international defense against terrorism, aggressive regimes, and potential nuclear adversaries. You bet we've bled blood and treasure for decades while eating fraud, waste, and abuse on a cataclysmic scale. I entirely agree that we've repeatedly become engaged with enemies that militarily...aren't even in our weight class; and largely due to political considerations, held back our best punches. We can't go gallivanting about the globe nuking anyone who gets in our way, or disregarding any effort at minimizing civilian casualties...but if there's a reason to go to war, it seems sensible that we do so efficiently (given his famous criticisms of a subordinate commander around a decade or so earlier...I'd think "Mad Dog" would agree, right?).

Trump may be crass, irreverent, or just plain wrong in many cases...but maybe it's time we get rid of some the "sacred cows" that could just as potentially be at the heart of some of the worst problems plaguing the Military. Perhaps we are too overrun by politically-motivated policies that simply don't work in the mathematics of warfare. Maybe our "zero tolerance" mentality has bred a generation or three of commanders who are more afraid of being fired for trivial reasons than they are of squandering tactical or strategic momentum. What if at some level, there's a self-perpetuating mentality that makes it "easier" to simply keep repeating the same processes...instead of looking for actual solutions.

Just my $.02.
