Marching.
I hated marching.
I loved Hiking.
Is it because Marching is something you have to do, and Hiking is something you want to do?
Or is it because Marching is regimented: Left, right, left, right, left, right..."?
Whereas in Hiking...well, you have to backtrack to find the trail, go around a rock or scree, maybe side step bear scatt. You get to make choices.
I did like long marches...because there was no longer the idea of Formation, unless you call a ten mile string of tired Soldiers along both sides of the road...a Formation.
No Marching in Jungles either. Yet, I loved Hiking in Jungles.
Well, on well worn Jungle Paths anyway.
By the way, the Term Rain Forest is (in my estimation) a misnomer, euphemism of the highest order. Jungles are not a Forest, they are...well, a jungle. I have been in both. I know the Term "Rain Forest" worked well for Marketing and trying to save Jungles in South America, Madagascar, and Borneo...and I applaud those necessary efforts. But don't pretend they are Forests.

There are bugs in the Jungle that are more irritating than relatives borrowing money. I have to be honest though, other than killer bees in Panama, the worst experiences I have had with bugs (while Marching or Hiking) were once in Goose Bay, Canada...where mosquitoes were bringing down Moose- literally. What looked like clouds, were swarms of mosquitoes. Not only did you have to wear hats with nets, long pants and long sleeves, but gloves too! Yikes.

Then up in Alaska I ran into flies. Yep. Some of those flies were the size of sparrows (okay, I know that is a SLIGHT exaggeration) . But they bit. One of the what we called in Ohio "Horse Flies" took a chunk out of me that led to me getting a serious blood infection called: Cellulitis. I asked the Doc how in the heck I got that from a fly. He said: "Flies eat nasty stuff, Bear Poop, Reindeer droppings, and whale carcasses...bacteria from all kinds of fecal matter."

I told him that was enough, as he continued on to list the disgusting things flies eat regularly...before they feed on you. Yech.

But hiking to the top of a mountain, or along the rocky West Shores of Ireland, or on a trail in the Black Forests of Bavaria, or the Appalachian Trail, the seashore on any island or in any country. I loved those hikes. Even through Urban Areas too.

Marching. Not so much.

Hiking to me is taking time to enjoy mother nature, without all the grumbling that happens in a march !

SGT Kevin Hughes- I can assure you sir, that experience I shared with Mr.Rucksack (capitalization for respect) was not the least bit amusing,my daughter years ago cajoled me to visit Costa Rica where I forced to take part in zip lining and jungle guided tours, she has yet to hear the end of it!

SGT Philip Roncari - Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha! I know the feeling. "Daddy why can't we go camping?" Me: "Oh, you, your sister and Mother can go camping. I will even give you my old shelter halves. I will be at the Marriot when you get back. "

Marching all you got to smell was the stank butt unhygienic guy in front of yo that ate boiled eggs at the chow hall before you left.
