Okay, this is going to sound weird...I mean Science Fiction and Snipers in the same post? But here we go.
My daughter was in a coffee shop and found this list of 50 Science Fiction books. Both of us (along with my other daughter) are avid Sci Fi aficionados. But it turns out, Kevina had read 10 of the books on the list, Kaylyssa 9, and me, 11.
Partially because many of the books are by International Authors. I have read a few Chinese Sci Fi (The Three Body Problem- et all), some Japanese Authors, and a bunch of Russian Fantasy/Sci Fi- including the "Day Watch, Night Watch, and Twilight Watch" series, which I don't even know how to Classify. Except to say they are very Russian. LOL
On this list there are many books by African Sci Fi Writers...so that should be interesting. And since Andy Weir's boo: "The Hail Mary Project" is soon coming out as a Movie...well, all us are Geeking out.
So what does that have to do with "Snipers." Well, when I Googled some of the book on that list, my email inbox got flooded with offers from online book stores ...and Amazon Kindle adds. I didn't go to those places. I just looked stuff up. And ...WHAM! Solicitations galore. How fast do they sell our information? LOL
So when I watched that 10 minute mini documentary about Lt. John George, an amazing Sniper in the Pacific Theater during WW II ...I enjoyed it. The next day, when I turned on YouTube...ten different YouTube channels with stories of Snipers were on my Home Page. Some from WW I, some from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and even one that is a channel done by a Sniper deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, and he has 38 confirmed kills. And he did a video about how accurate Snipers are portrayed in Hollywood Movies.
I didn't ask for any of those channels. I didn't go to any of those channels either. I just watched on little short video. And the Algorithm went to work. I did watch a few of them...so I guess it got that right. My relatives who served in WW II, no matter which Theater they fought in...absolutely hated Snipers...unless they were on our side. They thought of them as a necessary Evil, but hated that somehow, in the midst of all the carnage that is war, that being shot by a Sniper seemed ...well, unfair. Unsportsmanlike ...if you will. So learning about all the incredible feats of both shooting and courage of these Snipers was eye opening.
So the point is, if you look up anything, or decide to watch on a lark...be prepared to get pummeled by the algorithm...and ADDS .LOL

@sgt Kevin Hughes I know snipering is a necessary evil, but somehow making it a reading of viewing list makes me sad to think it. I guess our military can get on with their sniper duties by mentally going to video game mindset.

Yep, the psychology of a Sniper mindset is much different. Their's seems to be more of a "target acquired" thinking. I met Psychologist once who was over in Sarajevo , when they were sniping Civilians at Water Points...and he told me several stories that wrenched my heart. Too many to tell here.

As a big Sci Fi fan (as is my husband), I would love to find a list like that

I watch a couple of "Book Worm" channels and they have lists that go up to 100. But they are mostly old school, and I have read the majority of them. The list in the story- is from 2025...and man it shocked me to realize I had barely read 20% of it!

Kevin got a couple of instances concerning both Science fiction and Snipers, read a lot of Sci Fi as a kid graduated from comic books to Robert Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers “ got really car sick riding in the back of Dad’s 54 Plymouth one Sunday afternoon, didn’t do that again,Snipers, now that’s my more interesting tale ,our unit landed at Qui Yhon RVN trucked up to Tuy Hoa couple of weeks in county we were based in a larger base camp had those old GPTs 40 or 45 can’t remember size exactly, anyhow leaving said five holer latrine tent heard a distinctive crack, paid no mind went on my merry way, later found out we had a sniper operating outside the wire, sure enough went back and there was a bullet hole in the main post about a foot above where my punkin head had been, thank god he wasn’t a real sniper!Welcome Home Brothers.

Holy crap! I would have had to go right back into that latrine! I hope the counter sniper assigned to your Unit got that guy. Sheesh. And oh, yeah, Starship Troopers! One of my favorite characters in all of Fiction is his Hero character: " Lazurus Long, or "The Senior" as he was known. What a character. But my favorite "Combat" type Science Fiction Character is from Modessitt's book: The Forever Hero. The main character is a "Devil Kid" who becomes Commander Gershwin. And I so wanted to be him. LOL

The lucky thing for us at that time was the sniper was probably just a local farmer with an old bolt action French rifle,at that time early in the war (1966) our unit didn’t have counter snipers so our action was to search and clear the village next to our base camp, those villagers were very lucky we hadn’t shared our perimeter with the 17 th ROK division (White Horse) as we did later, those South Koreans were merciless and many people in that village wouldn’t be planting rice next season.I started reading Military history,Bruce Catton Civil war series at that time so the Sci Fi kinda took a hiatus for a while,Be Well Brother.
