Okay, maybe Sgt. Knoll, or Phylis, or AIC Rick can post the actual song for me. It is a Classic : "My Girl." I love the original...and about a dozen covers of that song. But tonight I heard "Country Singers' called:" Brother's of the Heart " sing it live.
And well, it is one of the best versions I have heard in a long time. Partially because they were obviously so into the song. Just belting out the lyrics and playing the instruments with glee. Perfect harmonies, and man, the lead singer was feeling it.
That song brings back so many memories. My first girl and I would slow dance together and sing it to each other. Her voice soft and pretty ...mine...not so much. But it was the song, not the words that made it sweet for us.
And in Basic training we wrestle waxing the Barracks floor. Everyone in just those thick green wool socks.
And three Black guys, a guy from West Virginia and another Puerto Rican guy from the Bronx...well, they took our brooms and pretended they were microphones. Then they sang that song.
The five of them just in tune...and sliding like the Temptations on that waxed floor. They sang it five times, letting each guy become the Lead. It was unbelievable. Forty or so of us, watching those guys in Fatigue Pants, OD shirts, and wool socks...Soul Train, American Bandstand, and the "Midnight Special" couldn't touch the soul in that Bay.
And one last memory of "My Girl."
I was in a basketball gym at Recreation Center in Charlotte NC back in the 80's. the gym was about to close up. It had five courts side by side. So there were maybe sixty or seventy men starting to change shoes, put dry shirts on, and pull the bleachers back out to the main court.
A guy comes in from the front of the gym and yells out:
"Hey Terry, your Girl called and told me to tell you she will be a few minutes late."
Terry (whomever he was) yells back:
"That's my girl! "
And that is all it took
Two guys slid out on the floor with just socks on and shorts. And started singing : "My Girl."
Then a few more joined them. Then well, everyone who knew the words...which was darn near everyone...sang ...My girl.
One guy went high on the last chorus, and we all clapped and left the gym.
Yep. Nothing like My Girl.

that was the original ! I loved it, and listened again. The version I wanted to show everyone is by brothers of the heart. I will post it if I get it right.
