More: "Out of the Mouth of Seniors:"
So I just put up the YouTube version of "My Girl," by the group: Brothers of the heart." And I was telling Kathy it was one of my favorite Covers of David Ruffin and the Temptations song.
So she listened to both versions with a huge smile on her face.
I told her that sometimes Singers do a song, and the original Artist says: "That's your song now."
She asked for an example. So I pulled up Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." Turns out, it made her cry. She had never heard it. So I told her that the guy from Nine Inch Nails, who wrote it and sang it first, told Johnny : "It is your song now."
Kathy had never heard that version either. She made this comment after hearing both versions:
"The Nine inch Nails guy made it Global...Johnny Cash made it personal."
And I thought that was a very astute observation. So then she brought up Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston...doing Dolly's song: "I will always Love You."
And doggone if Dolly didn't tell Whitney: "It is your song now!"
And so it goes. Sometimes people just connect a song to their soul. I can think of others too: "Sounds of Silence" done by Simon And Garfunkel, and then completely changed by David Draimen of "Disturbed."
Or Eva Cassidy changing : "Over the Rainbow " by Judy Garland. And Changed again by Brother Iz and his Ukelele. Mac the knife, My Way, and New York State of mind are other songs where the original and covers, stack up well against each other.
It was a lovely musical rabbit hole to go down. What songs in your life had a cover that either changed, or reinterpreted the original in a way that made it different ?

Sorry but no way was Whitney Houston's version better than Dolly's. Sorry.

A lot of folks will agree with you on that, including Whitney! Apparently she thought it was the most beautiful song ever.
