#1 - Bring back firearms education in the school system. We train our children how to properly operate a 2500 lbs, murder/killing machine under the guise of "Drivers Safety" which is a privilege not a right. And driven by insurance companies to lower claims cost.
#2 _ Enforce the laws already on the books.

Violent crime (including homicide) has been on the decline for 40 years. It is a socio-economic issue. The fewer people in poverty, the less overall crime we have.

"Gun deaths" are simply a tool-expanded look at violent crime. They are already statistically irrelevant in the grand scheme of things (about 10-12k/year in a nation of 320M).

This may sound cold, but "gun deaths" is not the correct question. When we look at the correct question, we realize that it is self-correcting.

CW3 Harvey K. - I discounted the suicides out, since that is a mental health issue. The 10-12k is actual homicides (1 person intentionally killing another different person) committed with firearms. If we include suicides the number is closer to 30k.

That said, in countries with strict gun control, there is equivalent quantities of suicide (per 100k). The methodology usually changes (like hanging) but not the overall effect.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS - I did not mean to suggest you were counting suicides as part of the 10-12,000 “gun deaths” per year, although suicides by gun certainly do fit that broad category of “gun deaths”.
Indeed, even those actual homicides can be broken down further into “justifiable” e.g. self-defense, and “criminal”. Even within the “criminal” category of homicide, the cases of criminals murdering other criminals, such as “gangbangers” settling disputes, do not worry most people, as long as no innocent bystanders become the victims of a “felony murder”.

To expand on my remark concerning suicide and guns ---
The USA, # 1 in gun ownership, is in 50th place worldwide, tied with Uruguay at 12.1 suicides per 100,000. That is far behind "gun free" South Korea with the second highest suicide rate in the world ----- 28.9 / 100,000, even though South Korea is 148th in the world in gun ownership with 1.1 guns per 100 people.
If you prefer to look at a European Culture for comparison, it is interesting to note that while Lithuania has the lowest rate of gun ownership in Europe, 0.7 per 100 people,(a little over 64% the gun ownership rate of South Korea) it still manages to somehow attain the 4th highest suicide rate in the entire world, 28.2 per 100,000.
The highest rate of suicide (44.2 / 100,000) is in Guyana, where there are apparently not enough guns to go around, and the prevalent suicide method is poisoning with insecticides.

CW3 Harvey K. - No implication that you were. I was merely providing further contextual information for the OP. When discussing firearms, clarity on the suicide issue is essential. It has the potential to conflate arguments to the absurd.Your data matches my own.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS - My reference was to data in nationmaster.com, which appears to be an accurate, unbiased source.
