The President and his Old Lady

There are a few things about recovering from my wounds that I never shared before now because they were so embarrassing. This letter from President Nixon captures two of them. Throughout my childhood I used the name Bobby. By junior high school I hated that name and was using Bob while trying to transition to Robert, which I now use exclusively. Some people just wouldn't make the transition. The other was the whole prayer thing. One of my doctors in Viet Nam told me that he heard from a brother of his, who was a Doctor back in the states, that he read in his local paper about folks praying for my recovery. It was a nationally carried article asking for prayers because I was refusing to give up the ghost after getting my brains blown out. So much for my tough guy image. The doctor asked me if I wanted a copy of the article. Hell no! But the letter from the President and his Old Lady was a nice touch -- like I believe they actually prayed for me. NOT

I later got a letter from Gerald Ford, but threw it away like a parking ticket. I didn't like the SOB. I think I still have a letter from Jimmy Carter around here someplace. That had to do with my having been elected a Carter delegate in 1980. Yep, ultra conservative Robert was a Jimmy Carter delegate.

I've always been a conservative, and I didn't care for Ford either.

You're the man, GySgt Thomas Vick! It took me many years to see the light. Hell, I even voted for Bill Clinton once -- somebody just shoot me!

I've a friend who voted for Carter, saw the light, and has been a conservative ever since. If I recall correctly, even my father was a Carter voter who changed his political affiliation when Reagan ran against him. I saw Ford in a motorcade in Ft Smith, Arkansas when I was in the first or second grade. There is a picture of him waving at the crowd from the limo's sunroof somewhere in my archives.

Cpl (Join to see) - Somewhere there' a quote, I don't know who said it or even how it was worded, but it had something to do with if your weren't liberal in your youth and a conservative when you were older there was something not right. Well, I sure fit the mold, and evidently so did your dad.

Sometimes those things we keep hidden from others have a way or a need to come out.

Speaking of Nixon, whose politics my grandfather detesed, lol, my grandparents received a letter from him on their 50th wedding anniversary. It still hung on the wall until my grandfather died. That was a time when you could detest someone's politics, but still respect the Office.

I'm sure that you can always sell this because the Signed memo from President Nixon concerning your wounds makes it Valuable to collectors. I have a letter written and signed by FBI director J edger Hoover written to my father after he inquired about something to the FBI. Letter was signed in 1962.
