Funny, it wasn't just republicans who were like Lindbergh. Joseph Kennedy Sr. wanted appeasement with Nazi Germany. He also wanted to meet with Hitler and went outside of the State Department to try to arrange a meeting.

With Lindbergh, his rhetoric was such that he couldn't be sent to Europe on USO stops/ morale boosters. So , the Government had him go to the South Pacific to do some appearances.
The Bund was a big concern at the beginning of WWII as well as before. They had Filled Madison Square Garden for a convention.
So, the Government couldn't bench Lindy, but they could send him to the Pacific.
