Good afternoon, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Disk, Planets, and Moons." PDS 70 (aka V1032 Centauri) is a very young star in the constellation Centaurus. It is located approximately 370 light-years from Earth and is approximately 5.4 million years old. There are two nascent exoplanets in the system (named PDS 70b and PDS 70c) which have been directly imaged by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Today's image was taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of 66 radio telescopes located in northern Chile.
Do you see the smudge just to the right of center? That is the protoplanet PDS 70c. Researchers believe the fuzzy patch surrounding PDS 70c is a disk in its own right, and is in the process of forming moons. This is never been observed before. Kind of a "Let there be light" sort of moment, huh?

Good afternoon, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price and thank you for this great APOD about the Star System PDS 70... Apparently the stellar formation of a moon within another star system has not been seen before...
The ESO video description states that...
"This sequence takes the viewer towards the southern constellation of Centaurus. We zoom in on the orange dwarf star PDS 70, which is located about 400 light-years away and has at least two planets orbiting it. The final shot shows the spectacular new image, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of the PDS 70 system, where a moon-forming disc is visible around planet PDS 70c."
