You know, it is the little things that stick out. And sometimes, you hit a "home run" with someone, by the littlest of things. Like a donut.
So my Son in Law wanted to check out the car he loans me to pick up the grandkids. I am not mechanical...he is.
So when I dropped it off, I brought some donuts.
My son in law, unlike me, has tremendous will power. 10 years ago he put on about 15 pounds. It made him mad. He figured out the weight he felt the best at...and lost all the rest. In a decade he has never varied from that weight. Rarely has treats. Stopped drinking Alcohol - and he was a "beer connoisseur!"
But he has a soft spot for Jelly Donuts. So when I brought donuts for the Grandkids ...I got a Jelly donut for him.
I walk in the house, and he was cleaning up from lunch. He saw the little box in my hand, smiled and said:
"Did you bring me a jelly donut?"
His face had a soft smile, and you could see the hope in it too. He was pretty sure I only brought donuts for the kids.
"Yes, I did. But it has purple frosting on it instead of powdered sugar."
He broke out in a big smile.
"That's okay. I like purple stuff too."
And he took his donut. So did the kids.
Such a little thing.
But watching that small family munch away on their donuts, with twinkling eyes and donut flakes on their lips....well, it made me feel good.
Sometimes, you just get the little things right!
