So tonight I was thinking about how lucky I was in my life, to fall for two different girls, who both were good people. I married my Kathy forty five years ago. About a decade after we were married, we were driving across Ohio, and I mentioned that my old Fiancee lived just off the highway by the Lake.
"Oh, give her a call, and see if she wants to go to lunch."
I was surprised. I asked her why she would want to meet her.
"Because Kevin, you have never said a bad word about her. My ex fiancé hates me. So I want to see what is different."
So I called. She said : "Sure, let's go to lunch. "
I had not seen her, or her kids, and never met her Husband. We had broken up almost two decades ago. So I was a bit nervous. We met for lunch.
Well, within minutes they were chatting like old friends. Talking about me, like I wasn't even there. LOL I had to remind them:
"Hey, I am sitting right here!"
Which made them both laugh.
So when we drove away, I said to Kathy: "What if old feelings had come up? What if I sparked something."
She smiled at me and patted my hand.
"That girl has no interest in you at all. Women can tell. You are in her past, and that's it."
And I wouldn't see that girl again until lunch with her brother in 2010. And never again.
And it made me realize that as good a person as she was, we weren't the right match. She went on to have almost a fifty year marriage with her hubby. And I am working on 46 with Kathy.
So I put two of my favorite pictures up, because they both show the joy in those girls faces. Yet one, stopped feeling joy around me. The other, well, the last picture is of us, Kathy and I, how we face life together...with smiles.
As Kathy told me on our Wedding night:
"You are either going to die in my arms, or at the end of them."
Which made me laugh.
Still does.
I will be in her arms always.
