My lab isn't gun shy but is only interested in hunting tennis balls. Loveable cuddler, but a bad hunter. My next will be a GSP for Grouse and Pheasant bit thats still a few years off.

Two comments: (1) Poodles are purported to be the most intelligent of dogs (which is why many circus dog acts were built around them). As a boy, I worked in a kennel for hunting dogs and one man brought his wife's poodle to be trained (on a bet). I spent a lot of hours running with that dog teaching it how to cast for birds. Since it didn't have the proper mouth for carrying birds (just teeth and no lips) we had to use a sock filled with straw and wrapped with barbed wire to teach it to not chew up the bird. Pointing was the toughest. It never truly matched hunting dogs that did almost everything by instinct. It could only approximate hunting behavior. Yes, though once hunting dogs, the instincts had been bred out of them. For example, Irish setters were almost useless as hunting dogs being bred for show. (2) Dachshunds may have been bred to go toe-to-toe (or tooth-to-tooth) with European badgers, but I wouldn't put them in the hole with an American badger. That would be cruel...
