More from my Time in Service.
At our gym we had one of those "Universal Weight Machines". There were also free weights. A giant Samoan Sergeant from another Platoon, used to come in and work out with the free weights and the Bench Press. But before his workout, he would walk over to the Universal Machine, lift it up with one hand, and stick his towel under the weights. Six hundred pounds of weights.
So one day I got up the courage to talk to him.
"Talofa, Sarge. How come you stuff your towel under the Machine all the time."
He smiled.
"I don't want anyone to take my towel."
I smiled back.
"Sarge, don't take this the wrong way, but anybody who saw you lift that thing with one hand, isn't going to take your towel away. And anyone who didn't see you put it there... isn't strong enough to lift those weights off the towel."
He smiled again.
"Maybe, but I am not the only Samoan in the gym."
Good point. LOL

I have an intresting Smoan experence whild in the army.
Mugle Tobin, from British Samoa, good friend and back up in a bar fight.
A little story about Mugle,
1: No one would dare tease him about his first name, unless they wanted to wake-up the next day.
2: Tobin hated being in the infantry, or more like in the field for some reason.
3: No one would dare to tease him wearing a traditional wraparound cloth called a lavalava. Looked more like a skirt.

So, if not liking the field and being in the infantry, why join the army? Well he told me one day.

Tobin, always wanted to live in the states to go to schools, so he got a job on a cruise ship that went back in forth to Califonia. His job was, a do anything when told, and alot of cleaning of the ship.
Once in Califonia, he jumped ship, and he had fanlily there in Calif. He got caught, and was deported back to british Somoa, 3 times. Lol

Tobin told us one day in the barracks why he enlisted in the army, and here it is,
- Tobin was told by the army recruiter, that if he joined the army for 4 years, he would automatically be a US citizen. Hard to beleive, but in the picture of us in 1972, my good Fhilipino army buddy Jun Huradura, had joined the army too, when told if he did, he would automatically be a US citizen.
Both Tobin and Jun had no choice of what MOS, all they knew, they were both in the infantry, and both volunteered for Airborne to get $55 more in pay a month.
Funny, both Jun and Tobin hated being in the infantry, but they were, and had to stick it out for the years.
-Tobin, told us one day that he heard that if he joined the bataillon boxing team, he wouldn't be going out to the field, due to training for boxing. So, Tobin joined the boxing team, and sure enough, he didn't go to the field with all of us Grunts.
- Jun on the other hand, heard if he got circumcised, that would keep him out of the field for awhile. And he did, and stayed in the barracks for a month, Lol.
-Me, I went to the field everytime, I lioked the field, and got promoted to PFC, and got inducted as the FDC for the 81mm mortars, due to I had graduated for high school. Lol
That's another story, somewhre in RP I told the story how I got FDC as a PFC. usually, the FDC was a NCO or a 2Lt. But, as the FDC for the 81mm motars, I was asked by my CO and 1st Sgt, "Where were you when we needed you in Vietman? We could have used you there. For some reason, I read the TM about the FDC job, and it all made sence to me, and I became good at it.\

Anyway, Tobin became the 2/505Inf boxing champion, he would go into the ring, get hit all over and just stand there, and in one punch, hit the other guy, and that guy fell down out cold, everytime.
He told us, that it was so easy, just hit the other guy, and the guy fell down. Lol
Jun, on the other hand, got out of the field for a month, and circumcised, but was soon back out in the field. Lol

In Dec 1972, Jun and I were transfered to Korea, me on the DMZ, and Jun down south with an infantry unit.
Tobin, stayed at Fort Bragg with the 82nd ABN, and that was the last time I seen or heard of him. By the way, while in the army with the 82nd ABN, Tobin got a Private Pilot License, he always told Jun and I, that one day he would be a commercial pilot for an airlines. Not sure if he ever did, I looke for Tobin for years on the internet, and had no results to find him.

I was also FDC as a Private! Way to go. Turns out I could spin the Plotter and read out the call for fire fairly quickly. My best compliment ever came from a Brigade Commander who was talking with a General about the upcoming Division Gunnery Championships. And the General told the Brigade guy that it looks like his Brigade would win. And our Captain overheard them when the guy said: "Yeah, on paper we look good, but they have Hughes."
That was sweet. And Samoans all have soft hands, until they hit you...and then, well, try to remember who, or where...you are. Absolutely loved your post!
