Why would everybody salute each other when two groups walk by each other?

Not sure if this has been discussed...
Why would a post overseas expect everyone to salute everyone in any given situation?
For example, Group A has a MAJ and CPT walking together from chow. Group B has a MAJ and LT walking to chow. All salute each other. Why? I understand who is saluting who but that is not what regulation states. What am I missing?

When I made the comment about doing like a private I was not implying that all privates do that, or that only privates would do it, maybe I should have added some emoticons or something to clarify that it was a joke

Even better, space out and create enough distance between you so that they salute twice and you only salute once.

We had an Intel Officer school at Goodfellow AFB when I was going there for Tech School. There quite a few times where we would see a "butter bar" coming, while in a group, and would space out so that the LT would have to return a salute to each one of us. It was all good fun. :)

SSgt (Join to see) - I was at Ft. Leonard Wood for CCC and the privates were notorious for doing that to LTs. One afternoon as I was walking to the shopette, I was approaching from one direction and a platoon of PVTs was approaching from the other. Their DS actually had them double-time so that they could beat me to the parking-lot and he could dismiss them, just so I would have to salute a gaggle of PVTs.

No, saluting has never been discussed on this website. At least I can't think of any thread in particular.

When in doubt whip it out as it was taught in basic many moons ago. Of course in today's PC military it would be salute everything when in doubt.

I love this line...
Especially when the other jr enlisted around would salute a Navy chief in khakis. I'd tell them it's a chief, but they wouldn't listen. They saluted anyways... It would, often times, be amusing to hear the admonishment from the chief in question.

SSgt (Join to see), I remember a SNCO walking around the tech school grounds intentionally wearing the epaulets to see how many airmen he could get to salute him.
