There is a lot of info in this article. I'm going to add, that once you've checked off all the boxes and before you write that 2-3K check to Whatever Arms Company, Check out a couple of Pawn Shops. If nothing else you get an idea of fit, feel, and balance.

SFC James High - Not that I would get rid of any gun, but that one was a gift from my father and it will be passed down.

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing your first hunting rifle. 1st, determine what you are primarily hunting for. 2nd, evaluate the terrain and clearance you will have when hunting.3rd, Realize that your age will be or is a factor because the older you get the less your body can deal with recoil and noise levels. My primary hunting rifle is a New England Firearms Survival Rifle in .357 cal. and is a single shot break open breach loader because it makes me slow down and take my time to get the best shot (a neck shot) so the deer drops where it stood (I am 57 years old and HATE chasing a deer thru the woods) and my hunting area allows a clear shot of only about 70-75 yards, so I don't make myself suffer all that extra recoil and pain. Besides the further you have to chase a deer is further that you have to drag it to your vehicle!
