Before I went to Parris Island, a Marine Sergeant told me that his boot platoon, like every other he had ever heard of, included a native Irishman (known to everyone as "THE Irishman"), a Jew (known to everyone as "THE Jew"), and a Native American (known to everyone as "THE Chief").
That was my boot platoon as well.

That’s awesome CW3 Harvey K., thank you for sharing. It’s funny how we pick up some nick names through out our service. My nicknames always started with “Red” lol.

SFC (Join to see) - I think those nicknames were only in effect through boot camp. The amazing thing, both to that Marine Sergeant and myself was, "How the hell does the Corps manage to assemble boot platoons with those required members?"

SFC (Join to see) - No booze for boots on P.I. We were not even allowed soda. Even the beer swillers (like me) would die for a Coke.

When the first colonists arrived, they were marveled with plenty of game, lands covered by vast forests, clear rivers and lakes teaming with fish. It's sad we took that all away from them.

What is really sad is the fact that it wasn't until the last few decades that this even became a thing! The other sad thing is that nobody really seems to care about it until it is days away, and then it gets forgotten until next year when it becomes convenient again!
Oh, it is celebrated on two different dates, 27 September in CA. And 14 October in 7 other states.
