The Army Reserve Simply Doesn’t Have Enough People Willing to Fill Command Slots

If you are a Company Grade or soon-to-be Field Grade Officer that has been board selected for promotion in the Army National Guard and yet you can't get promoted because you can't find a slot or the good old boys are still calling the shots, then come to the Army Reserve and get your promotion! We have slots and Leadership positions for you and that includes Mid-level Non-Commissioned Officers! I was board selected for CPT in the ARNG in 2003 but I did not take the promotion until I went to the USAR in 2006! It does not matter if you are combat Arms and have Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, Pathfinder because we can use you in a few select Airborne and Non-Airborne Civil Affairs units. We also have Military Police, Logistics and many other branches in Combat Support and Combat Service Support.
I know it will be difficult for some to get into the Inactive Ready Reserve. The non-commissioned officers can easily get into the Inactive Ready Reserve by not reenlisting. Officers will have a harder time convincing their command to let them go into the Inactive Ready Reserve. Getting into the Inactive Ready Reserve is the only way you can transfer to the Army Reserve. Once there, Human Resources Command can pull you into the Army Reserve. Those officers in the Inactive Ready Reserve who want Company, Battalion or Brigade command can also opt in as well.

Recruiters need to get with it and bring the reserves back up to strength.

SSG William Jones - I could have gone into the IRR in 2003 but I doubt it would have been allowed to due to the War in Iraq. Going into the IRR is one way for an Officer to get his promotion if HRC Promotion Board says yes but if there are not any slots or if they prefer someone else in the ARNG.

Sir Looking to Promote to E-6. No Positions for schooling and 3rd in my unit and 8th in the state for 31B. Would like to promote and stay in a little longer if possible. I would like more info on this. Message me if possible.

I have emailed at least a dozen units and retention NCOs over the past few months. The only unit which has ever responded to me, responded because I served in Afghanistan with their S4 NCO and I messaged him on Facebook letting him know what was going on.
However, after a meet and greet with the CoC I decided that unit wasn`t for me.
So i`m still looking for a unit. Preferably where I can change my MOS to 35L

IN my opinion the Recruiters are doing fine, its the dysfunctional system hat is in place to do the actual assignments and vetting that is the problem, the bigger problem not counting the Surgeons office the security clearance investigations that morph into years not months.

Good post, sir. I will say that after having been in all 3 components, the ARNG seems to suffer from the GOB mentality the worst. I moved over to the USAR side a few years ago and I was glad I did. I'd still love to be able to find a way to some HOOAH schools without being told we are out of money. I will say the full-timers still seem to have special favorites, but it's not as bad as it was in the guard. Hell, I'd gladly go to selection school for free if I could just get a seat.

My Reserve Command tell us all that schools (Captains Career Course, ILE-CC, NCO Battle Staff Course, ALC, SSC,etc.) More important than the upcoming missions.

Roger. Maybe someone smarter than me up top could figure out a way to build in some fun tab schools into some required training and kill 2 birds with one set of orders.

Why is that ? Because many already in the pipeline get overwhelmed with extra duty, extra time dedicated at the expense of our own time ( both family and work) IOT meet deadlines, briefings, TELECONs and a myriad of other numerous taskers, on our own dime. For free.
The USAR needs to work HARD and make more efforts to RETAIN the available talent they already have. Not dick them with pay shortages, restrict career movement, deployment opportunities and administrative/ policy bullshit, instead of focusing on recruiting raw material with limited experience. WAIT, sounds familiar.........or yes, Silicon valley comes to mind. After all, why pay already established experienced officers when you can get cheaper by the dozen ?
That also means that those up higher need to understand, that those of us in the USAR cannot be expected to run around conducting command duties on our own time, while balancing jobs, business obligations, family demands, school to name a few. It is unrealistic, and unreasonable.
Easier for someone on a full time position to pass judgement. I'm just saying.
I don't work for free. Not in the civilian world, nor in the military.
So let's start by paying people their fair share.
