12 April 1912: The RMS Titanic sinks less than three hours after hitting an Atlantic iceberg. The giant cruise ship was on its maiden voyage from England to New York City and had been promoted as being unsinkable.

ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) Lifeboats pull away from the ship as it starts to go down. (2) Titanic begins its final plunge with more than 1,500 passengers still aboard.

White Star paid no compensation until December 1915. They finally agreed to pay $664,000 to to be be divided amongst the survivors. Worked out at about $950 per person...

1SG Dean Mcbride (MPER) (CPHR) - In the movie, Kathy Bates played a good role as Molly Brown.

Thanks Dale I have read a lot on the Titanic and have seen the dumb movie. I joined the Army because I had no desire to be on the ocean. I wouldn't even go on an ocean cruse today. I'd rather be shot at than swim.
