North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) on Tuesday, South Korea has said, ahead of a rare state visit to Pyongyang by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The soldiers retreated after the South Korean military fired warning shots, but Seoul believes their violation of the border was not intentional.
South Korea said it believed the soldiers accidentally crossed as they were fortifying the border, the second such incident in over a week.

It's not hard to unintentionally cross the line of demarcation if things are still the same in the DMZ. On my first tour, in 1970, there was one single strand of barbed wire hung on rotting waist high posts. In some places the wire was hanging down to the ground with the signs in English and Korean and some stretches, they were non-existent. On my second tour in 1975, nothing had changed since then. We had to be really familiar with our area of operation and plan our Night ambush patrols carefully, especially on those moonless nights.
