"I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU"
Dolly Parton wrote this song for Porter Waggoner (August 12, 1927 - October 28, 2007). She sang it to him at the 2007 Opry 100 Country's Greatest Songs. Whitney Houston (August 9, 1963 - February 11, 2012) recorded and performed the song in the movie "The Bodyguard" starring herself and Kevin Costner.

SPC Paul Eiden in the movie the song was playing the in bar restaurant scene. It was being sung by a male. Then it was the goodbye song for the end of the movie.

And as her Mother said when she watched her sing: "What you are witnessing is...greatness." RIP Whitney.

SGT Kevin Hughes it saddens my heart the journey she took. Money and fame is a double edged sword. What did you think about Dolly's version. 2nd link?

PO3 Phyllis Maynard - I liked Dolly's version, but Whitney's is well, unique. And yeah, her life didn't play out like the song. Sigh.

SGT Kevin Hughes this is the song I was referring to when I read Dolly was furious because Whitney started with Kevin Costner and the song went through the stratosphere.

How dare I refute, or try to improve upon, what Dolly said herself, "When Whitney did 'I Will Always Love You,' I mean look what a grand song she made out of that simple, heartfelt, you know, song... it was just amazing. Whitney is the one who took it worldwide and really made it a household word — or song, I should say — so I'll always be thankful to her for that." Two absolutely amazing vocalists and arrangements that give a slightly different take on a wholly beautiful song.
Tiny piece of trivia here, also revealed by Dolly: She wrote, "I will always love you" in the morning while watching the morning sun come into her place. That afternoon, she wrote 'Jolene'.
That's a good day.

SFC John Skaarup music was music to me all those years ago. So, I have some really diverse tastes. The Grand Ole Opry, Hee Haw, Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies are the tv shows where I started to like country music. Dolly made the statement that the song now belonged to Whitney and she went and got rich with it. I saw that interview. But, yes, Whitney blew it to the stratosphere, and co-ztarring with Kevin Costner didn't hurt.
Kevin Costner was in Cary, North Carolina, at the Country Club, I think, this fan said swoop me up like in the Bodyguard. Kevin went to pick her up and strained, then he strained to to lift her in his arms. The local news stations aired it. I cracked up!

SFC John Skaarup this was a complex movie. It dealt with some pretty heartfelt issues.
