I have been in a lot wonderful places of Worship, of almost every Faith imaginable. Towering Cathedrals, Spiraling Churches, down to Ancient Celtic caves. But the Church I am most enthralled with, is the one in the Photo.
It is called: "The Church in the rock." Why?
Because it is inside a giant rock hollowed out to hold several hundred people. And the roof is tons of coiled copper. It has a massive pipe organ in it too.
When you go in...there is just something calm and peaceful about just being inside it. Tranquil comes close, but is lacking the spiritual warmth of the place.
It could be a meadow, or glade from a mystical story - just misplaced in Time.
It is in Helsinki Finland. If you get there...go there!
Every time we ported in Helsinki, I made some time to go there and just sit inside. Maybe it is like an Earth Mage or Nature Goddess, built a little place for themselves to sit and just empty your mind...maybe your heart. Or...simply to recharge your soul.
Me ...being me, as much as I loved it, I had to think about how it got there. It was designed and built by two 26 year old Architects back in 1968. And then I made myself laugh.
I mean who thinks when they are looking at thousand ton rock:
"I bet we could hollow out that giant bolder...and turn it into a Church."
Well, it was the sixties, and if you are in your twenties, sitting on a giant boulder and high as a kite...I bet the conversation went like this:
"Hey man, I have an idea."
"Far out. Like what man?"
"Well, I bet we could hollow out this rock, make it a church, and you know, like see God and stuff."
"Oh man, that would be groovy. I can dig it."
"We could like put an organ in it and make the roof out of copper! You know, keeping it all things from Earth and Nature..and shit."
"Oh, Man, Far Out. "
"Like do we blow it up, or like get a bunch of chisels and shit?"
"No. I think we just hollow it out.
"Here, take another toke. I gotta think about this."

And they did it.

I bet that church is very beautiful, I've been in churches all over Europe. The one I love the most is the old log church in Artie, WV. this church is older than the state. It started out as a barn. I helped to put the bell on the roof. My entire family grew up here.

Hey Sarge, is that near Logan? I think I might have driven bye there a long time ago. I bet there were some "flat footed" dances in there and some clogging too. Sure is pretty.

SSG Douglas Lasley - I looked it up, and it is near PAX, which I know I have been to, so I think I may have seen that church ...and man what a family history you have. My family just keeps moving around. We have only been in America since the 1848-50 range (Potato Famine Irish) None of my Great Grandparent spoke English, just Irish)
And from the 12 kids in my family only one still lives in Cleveland. Our history rarely goes beyond two generations in the same town. Good on you!

If you cross Toney's Fork Mt., it's all dirt, you would be about 1mile from Artie. but Logan is due West of Artie. All said yes you probably have seen it. Loretta Lynn came to see it and it was supposed to be put in the records as one of the oldest log churches in the US.

Well, you have the wording right Brother Kevin, I'm just glad they only made it of Earth and Nature, without the shit. (HaHaHa).
