How do you feel about the new slate of military themed TV shows coming?

Not that I have great expectations for these shows to last long, but we seem to have a higher than normal crop of new shows with a military theme such as "The Brave," "The Long Road Home," "Valor”, & "SEAL Team." (Thanks Military.com)
Do they help the image of the military? Hurt it? Mislead the public about the military (even if unintentionally)? Pander to pro-military sentiments? Other? What are your thoughts?

The shows may end up being entertaining but I'm not planning on watching them so I won't know. What I do know is that the people who produce TV shows do so to make money. And in order to do that (at least in the amounts they hope to) they need to cater to a wide audience. So reality will take a backseat over fireball grenades, never changing mags, and units that never leave combat zones...ever. And I get it. Having an episode where the guys just stand guard, talk about which actress they'd like to make it with, no bad guys ever show up, and then they go play a video game would be TV suicide. But, if and when they start getting political and using the show to advance some agenda we could find the current tide of massive public support turning. Not overnight, but eventually.

MAJ (Join to see) - That sounds pretty rough. I hope you're the exception and that sort of behavior isn't becoming the rule. I do think the tide could be turning but hopefully not to a huge degree. One theory I have that could skew the publics view of the military is that vets themselves are contributing to it. When Iraq and Afghanistan first started vets were all gung-ho and Joe Public was behind him 100%. But as vets come home more and more disillusioned about what was going on over there it let the public relax their view on it as well. I still haven't seen anyone treat a vet like you described but I'd never think we as a country couldn't get there again.

I was around 40-50 years ago, just too young to serve. Even as a kid I was disgusted by the treatment of Vietnam vets in the late 60s and early 70s. I always thought it was wrong and took a lot of crap from kids at school for supporting your generation of warriors.

SGT Reno, i agree but i recently read that per agreement with DOD Hollywood is not to be 100% correct especially with uniforms. After 38 yrs i, too, have a tendency to notice what is not correct and my son still will ask for my assistance with his! Hope this is helpful...

Sgt Reno, that's no different than any other show about some career. My BIL won't watch any medical shows because they are soooo far off he just gets mad. ;)

I hate the silly inaccuracies of television medicine shows, my brother hates the silly cop shows, and I know that the myriad SpecOps shows are very likely to be just as accurate.
