It is all about attitude!
I have played chess around the world with all sorts of people as a result my military career.
Some of the best games I have ever played in my 50 + years playing this game have come from people very different from me by sex, age, race, preferences, etc. as they kicked my ass over the chess board.
They made me better not by who went 1st because we'd always play at least two games; rather, by the quality of their play and the content of their character!
BTW, Anytime I sat down to play I would always get a quarter and ask my opponent to define if the heads side was black or white. I'd or they would flip the coin allowing it to land on the table or ground. I'd have my opponent call it in the air. You never assume one side or the other. Another technique is placing a pawn of opposite color in each hand and the taking them from behind the back to have you opponent choose a hand. If they chose the hand with the dark piece they play the 1st game as the dark pieces, but if they chose the light pieces they'd start out playing first. It has come out 50/50 roughly over the years.
The pictures below are of three UVA students helping with the chess program I created at our local Boys and Girls Club (3-4 days a week). The other picture is a mother and her son (immigrants from Iraq) I helped with skills development. We met at Panera Bread for lessons.
There is NO greater pleasure than helping kids develop skills that no one can take away from them and teaching them that chess is a game that when mastered is one of the greatest - equalizers I know!!!
Finally, I included Einstein's quote because playing chess at a high level requires great imagination combined with the critical thinking skills that are valued by those who care about such duel capacities in those with whom they associate!
