I know that while I was stationed in Germany for 7 years I was traveling nearly every weekend and now that I'm retired and living Stateside, I really miss all the travel, who else feels the same?

I lived in Japan for 13 of my 26 years of active service. Not only do I miss it but my family misses it as well.

Miss the travel opportunities, well that's what I thought it was but it is not the travel opportunities that I miss!

I retired after 24 years in the Navy. Had some really great assignments. After retiring in 2006 got a job at the VA. Something was missing! What? Has to do with the question I posted. Why do veterans do high risk activities after or during active duty. I did answer the question posed by a VA regional director at a town Hall meeting. I stated because we/I trained them that way. I was looked at like a one eyed monster. His only rely was who is that. Funny part was I waited for one of the So-called professionals in that field to answer. After they just sat their. I was like I know the answer. Can tell not a one of them know what I was talking about so I just stopped after my comment. I miss the getting ready for the operation more than the travel. The multi tasking every day with a sense of agency and purpose. Then one comes home and a cerebration. That's the short version of what I miss the most.

I was only active duty for four years and was stationed over in Germany for two of those years, but I was single back then. I enjoyed getting the chance to see that part of the world and (looking back on it) I realize how precious that opportunity was. I have always wished I could afford to take my wife on an extended tour of Europe, but it just isn't the same now.
After my time in the Army, I have worked for the Navy as a civilian since 1999 and up until 2009 I traveled extensively, but for short trips where my family could not come along. I did enjoy that travel also, but mostly I enjoyed being paid to go to those places.
If I could do it all again, I think would stay in the military to be stationed in more places and have time to explore like I did when I lived in Germany those years.
