As I have stated here, becoming a "known candidate" is one of the keys to finding the job you want. As you network, and you develop those relationships, remember that keeping them current, not just for the 5-10 min you had at that first meeting is just as important 2-3 months or a year from now. That networking may help you today, tomorrow, or next year. But it may also help that other "known candidate" in your network. So network, continue the relationship, and use that relationship for yourself and others.

I'll add to Senior's comment. Networking is about relationships. As you develop them, more people keep their eye out for you as you do for them. You can be competitors but many times there's a better project-person fit which the "network" should help make happen. It's not just talking to people; it's proactively working to make things happen. If you're new to the workforce, good mentor-protege relationships can be established. As you become more skilled in the marketplace, then give back to it and mentor others. In general, when the community works for success, individuals become more successful. Networking is not what you get out of it. It's what you give into and others give to you. BTW be leery of those who want to attach strings to their relationship. Trust, truth, and honor don't require strings.

Networking is more than a tool used for getting a job. Its a way to keep up with what is going on in your industry. To chat with others in you particular career field.
