Are you planning to go get a free meal at a restaurant on Veterans Day? Why or why not?

It’s almost that time of year! Veterans and those currently serving will celebrate Veteran’s Day. Many will take advantage of those free meals and deals for Veterans. Have you done that? Are you planning to this year? Have you ever seen folks abuse it? I once saw a surprise APFT the day after Veterans Day. Along with height/weight. You know....just because. What say you?

After all the experiences I had, while I got paid to do them, nobody owes me anything. My life was so much bigger than it would have been if I "shoveled $#!*" in Louisiana.

Hell no! There are way too many posers and clowns out and about on Veterans Day. I will however say a prayer for my fallen comrades and attend a dignified memorial service in their honor.

I second that Hell no. I think all restaurants should enforce showing ID proof of being Active Duty or a Veteran. Many of them in my area don't and it would be a good way to weed out the fakes. I'd rather honor those who served and sacrificed in a better way than be surrounded with posers who don't know what it means.

So Americans are trying to say Thank You in their own way and you going to let a few take that away? Go enjoy Veterans Day in-spite of the posers you deserve it.
I plan on visiting two places. A gentleman my mother knows, hits up every place in the town he lives in. I am not greedy.

I calculated if I took advantage of the free meals, I could have had 3 meals a day for 2 days. D
idn't do it but I did take one meal and tipped the server the price of the meal.

I’ve not taken advantage of Veterans Day freebies in the past, CH (MAJ) William Beaver, and I don’t plan on it this Veterans Day either. Also, I’ve never seen anyone take advantage of or abuse the offers to the best of my knowledge.
As far as a surprise APFT after Veterans Day, as a commander I personally would not have done such a thing. However, it’s up to each individual soldier to always be in good physical condition, so had that happened to me, I simply would have taken and passed the APFT whenever required.

Most places get packed with so many people looking for a free meal that it isn't worth going. Have I done it in the past? Yep, once or twice when I happened to be out anyway but have never gone out just for the meal. Haven't gone on Veteran's day for years to a place that offers a free meal.
I don't like to wait around at a restaurant anyway, I am not going to wait longer just to save a few bucks. I have seen lines literally around the building. No chain restaurant's food is worth that.

CH (MAJ) William Beaver I will attend a Veterans Day ceremony/parade at Fort Vancouver, Vancouver, WA. Afterwards I will eat a free meal at Olive Garden. Olive Garden is my favorite restaurant that I eat at about once a month. I take advantage of all veteran/senior citizen discounts that I can. If they do not offer a discount, that is fine. I have not seen any folks abuse it.
I was at the Economy parking lot at the Portland Airport last week and handed the cashier my ticket. I had my wallet out and was getting ready to pay. The lady saw my cap and asked if I was a disabled veteran, and I said I was. She then asked to see my VA card. I handed it to her, and she said that since it said I had a service connected disability, that I owed nothing. I thanked her as this saved me 120 dollars. I have parked at this lot about six times, and was not aware of this policy.
As long as you are polite about it, why not take advantage of what is being offered? I was discharged in 1972, and things are much different that they used to be.

No, crowds, especially at restaurants, don't appeal to me, nor do establishments that only do this on Veterans Day.

It's a nice gesture, but I'm not much for crowds and don't feel that I'm owed anything.
