The Proud Canadian Navy is wearing out. They lost two supply ships recently (one to a fire and the other rusted through) and both had to be retired. Now their last Destroyer is also rusting out. Their Navy Brass says it will take 6 years for a replacement. The Canadians have not asked us for any help but they should. Canada does help NATO with patrols in the Black Sea. They need the ships that we have.

The reality is that Canada has no incentive to build up their Navy. Why? Because we will never let anything happen to them. They're content to let us bear the burden of their protection. They spend a lot of time talking about their vaunted 'free' medical and education, but the only reason they can afford those things is because they don't have to spend a significant portion of their GDP on defense...because they know WE will protect them. I don't have a problem with this. I DO have a problem with them failing to acknowledge it. And I say this as someone who lived in Halifax for 2 years.

Ah yes, the good 'ol NATO mentality. As long as Uncle Sam is willing to pony up the bulk of the expense, the NATO allies are willing to help out. I remember during the early days of the Libya bombing campaign several countries used up their entire national stockpile of munitions in about a week's worth of operations.

LTC Stephen Conway - That just seems to support what I said, Major, if I'm understanding correctly. They're ok with being reliant upon our Navy.

They have no need of a Navy when we are here to protect them.

Thanks for your opinion but they are our trip wire to Russian expansion. Russia wants the Northern continental shelf like China wants the South China Sea. They want the oil down there. They should protect themselves when our response time is days away.

1SG Al Brown - We buy oil from people who wish us dead or our friends hurt like Iran and Venezuela. Our POTUS says no to their pipelines Keystone XL pipeline over their 'dirty oil' yet nobody is Canada is being executed weekly or having their hands cut off like they do in Saudi Arabia.

The main reasons I was against the Keystone pipeline was:
The fact the company who was to build it wanted to use Eminent Domain to "buy" (legally steal) land from private owners, the oil obtained wasn't going to be sold to the USA, and it wouldn't have brought many (if any) jobs to the US. If I'm wrong please correct me, but that's how I remember it. Phase 4 at any rate.

Why would they want to buy them? Do THEY think they need them?

Canada is retiring its last Destroyer due to rust and no replacement for 6 years. Should we sell the Canadian Navy 2 of our Frigates to help?

As I understand it, we are getting ready to retire our Spruance class destroyers. We usually retire ours when they still have a lot of life left in them, and sell many of them to foreign navies. I'm sure we can arrange a sale/transfer of an old Spruance class ship to our next door neighbors the same as we might sell to the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, or any of the other nations we have sold ships to.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - First time I saw one I thought it must be some kind of new cruiser. It was too big to be a destroyer.

LTC Stephen Conway - The Spruance class ships were the latest and greatest destroyers back in '78, the first time I saw one. I feel reasonably certain those ships have the same or better capabilities than the Canadian ship. These were the first gas turbine powered ships, have 5"/54 guns fore and aft, ASROC anti-submarine rockets, and I believe they were fitted with Sparrow missile tubes port and starboard. This is just what I recall from over 35 years ago. I am certain they got several updates in their armament as the years went by. And the US Navy also upgrades the radars and other electronic equipment on its' ships as newer technology becomes available. The Spruance class ships also carried a similar ASW helicopter.

Canada has been an ardent supporter of our efforts in Afghanistan. If they need some help we should certainly lend a hand. We shouldn't supply their WHOLE Navy for them, but a couple ships would probably help them out and strengthen ties with an already good friend.

Rusted through?!
How much do you have to neglect maintenance in order for that to happen? Years? A Decade?
Obviously Canada has decided that their Navy is not a national priority.

Not to channel Donald Trump, but I am pretty certain NATO has specific treaty requirements outlining each nation's commitment to national and alliance defense.

This is what happens when Sailors fail to conduct proper "sweepers" and "INSURV". Ask any Navy Sailor.

As I said, Top, they have no reason to keep their shit up to date. They know we will protect them. Shitty attitude, but it is what it is. At least until we let Russia invade them. Bet they'd find money, then.

LTC Stephen Conway maintenance is strictly scheduled, sweepers is multiple times a day, and INSURV is every 3 years.
