While I understand that there is a lot of events downrange that, for lack of a better word, suck. However, during your tour(s), what did you do to keep your mind off of things? Learn an instrument? School work? Gym time?

What did you do to get you through the time in theatre?

I worked with a CPT from a Hungarian Infantry Bn. One day he asked me if I'd ever driven a BTR-80? No I replied. So the next Sunday after a block of instruction from his driver, they put me in the driver's seat. Those things can really move!

We had a pretty serious spades tournament that kept going for nearly all of our deployment. Got pretty serious at times! (but not TOO serious! lol!). Of course SFC Mark Merino , would never understand that! lol!

Now that I'm retired, the gym is a navigation reference point on the way to the Class VI store.  "You go down this road till you see the gym, then turn left and it's a block in front of you"!

I remember when Dodge City was just a just bowl and the first trailers began to show up. Was named after the CDR of V Corps STB, LTC Dodge!

PVT Hunter Hoffmann Hitt, I worked out as much as possible. Played Madden as much as possible. I got as much laughing and joking that I could jam in one day even on the job. I ate too much candy and cookies but it got me through. I read my bible and prayed when I felt the need. Called my wife and parents as much as possible during my four years of combat tours.

Lots of gym along with my buddies who were 'laxidaisical' for the lack of a better term while stateside. And I'll volunteer for more deployments in a heartbeat!

This was my favorite time of day - near beer and cigars.

I can't do the near beer thing. I don't like the idea of being sober and vomiting.
