Update...it seems the French tried to get this passed, but it was a no go. Thanks to LTC Stephen Ford for the update.
WOW...I first saw this on MSNBC...but because I don't like this station, I did a search and found a dozen sights with the article. How is it possible there are so many different articles about it....well alrighty then...thanks for the update.

Sgt Kelli Mays I just got an update from my cousin in France about this discussion.
BLUF: The French government nixed the concept
"Steve, Segolene Royale, the environment minister recently tried to introduce a law against wasting food. This failed for constitutional reasons, but she is working with the food distribution groups to find a way of preventing this waste on a voluntary basis. It may sound strange to you, but here in Europe, it isn't! People first! Regards, ..."]

Many stores in the USA are told not to do it, but many Store Managers keep it quiet and do it anyway. Just have to keep it on the down low. I figure if I ever get fired for doing it, God will provide me an alternative work place.

No company or person should throw out edible food. We have so many hungry people in our country, and giving it to them should be the only outcome.

Sgt Kelli Mays We have always been a wasteful country and even worse these days because of the liability. Some would like to do good but if anything goes wrong the responsibility falls back on them.

Walmart does donate a large potion of food to local charities. I am sure a lot of others do the same thing. But you run into a lot of liability. The charity that does this has to accept a lot of responsibility to do this. In our times a lot of them don't want to do this and would rather just take money.

It should be given to soup kitchens and organizations that feed the poor. We should do the same thing in our nation

No I did not, Sgt Kelli Mays. Throwing out edible food is certainly a waste in principle. However the process of determining when food is no longer "edible" is not simple.
I sent a message to my cousin who lives in France to ask him about it. Once I get a response I will update this post.

Sgt Richard Buckner - Lol, if they are like the ones around here most of the time you will see one person there. They work a person to death. You can get some good buys especially when items go on clearance.

Food Lion and Walmart's in Dalton Georgia donate close dated food. ( 2 days before best buy date) to several places. I know of two homeless shelters and one free drug rehab they give food to. All chains should follow and do the same. I have worked in retail and groceries for years. A lot of items are good as high as 6 months after the expiration date. I wouldn't be afraid to eat canned foods a year or two out of date as long as there is not bulges, bad dents or rust. We live in a wasteful world. I was told we had to write off and throw everything away where I work.. I still box it up and take it to a Care Mission that feeds the poor and homeless. I told My DM I was doing it and if he didn't like it to fire me. I know several old people that live on limited incomes and I'll bag just out of date food up and drop it off to them after I get off work. One elderly couple told me they went two weeks without income and would have had very little to eat if I hadn't brought them several boxes of food that had just went out of date.
