Do cadets actually outrank non-commissioned officers?

I deal with cadets a lot, and they insist they out "rank" every NCO in the army. My usual response is somewhere around the guides of "uh-huh." Can I get some clarity of this?

I encountered such a cadet or two in my day. Let's say that Cadet now a MG still calls me Sir! He drives me nuts and we have been friends since June 1989. LoL

LTC Stephen F. Thanks for sharing knowledge I'm already in possession of. Please read the full thread prior to responding which may help you respond logically and professionally. FYI some of the regulations were written by some of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines posting in Rally Point! HOORAH

Thanks for sharing CSM Tee Oden When I was a USMA cadet [1976-1980] SGM and CSM saluted me when I was a CTLT assignment in Germany in 1979 and when I was a CTLT Drill Sergeant cadet at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

LTC Stephen F. As a former DS, I fully understand. Coming from a strong military family of Officers and Enlisted professionals, I have always been taught "Salute the rank not the individual". More importantly, understanding one's role saves lives on the battle field. Some folks have not grasp that concept yet. Good connecting with you. Thank you for your service.

Greetings...........
I have dealt with this issue before during my US Army Years prior to my switching over to the USAF. I was a 19E & 19K and periodically we would "entertain" West Point and ROTC Cadets in their Junior & Senior Semesters prior to their graduation / official commissioning. Most would look-learn & listen ie stay out of the way, but others thought they were Gen. Patton and would order the Enlisted & NCOs around like they were a bunch of raw recruit butlers or just out of Basic. Because of this, these "cadets" were highly resented and viewed as spoiled brat prima-donnas. Personally I feel that NO CADET be they ROTC or from the Academies has the right to order anybody around, especially well-trained and experienced Military Personnel who have already paid-their-dues so to speak and officially proven themselves. Cadets and ROTC'rs don't deserve to be saluted or allowed to give orders until they Officially Graduate and have been given their commissions.

Cadets in your unit for training should be treated as future officers. Give them the same respect as you would an officer just as you would expect respect from them as an NCO.

Yes, Colonel I agree with that statement in addition that the young folk (cadets) need to show respect for the senior NCO's to which unit(s) they are assigned as they too have earned it and in turn grow and learn from the men and women whom they are looking to lead.

Don't confuse a Cadet rank with that of and Officer or NCO on active duty, the guard or Reserve. Cadet rank only exist inside the Cadet Structure. A Cadet officer only merits a salute from Cadets of lower rank and not even a private has to salute a Cadet officer or any other Cadet. They do not even outrank a private let alone an NCO. Until such time as the are no longer a Cadet and actually receive a Commission they have no standing to issue orders to anyone but a Cadet of lower rank within the Cadet structure. They are students leaning to be officers, NOT Officers of the Armed Forces, or its Reserve or Guard components. Until a Cadet is either a Commissioned or Warrant Officer He has no right or authority to give any orders to anyone but a lower ranking Cadet. I have been Cadet and also instructed Cadets and certainly knew Who was in charge between the two and it was NEVER the Cadet. This is a case of someone that is only a Cadet trainee that somehow thinks He is more important than He actually is. I don't know where some Cadets have come up with those foolish ideas by NO Regulation, Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard or Instruction in the Air Force give them that status over enlisted people of any rank until they are actually Commissioned. A Cadet wishing or think that doesn't make it true and I'm happy to report I Myself haven't witnessed any Cadet make that statement or try to exert authority He or She doesn't even have !

amazes me that we have so many Senior NCO that run off at the mouth and answer question positivly befor they check the regs to see what they say. It is like doing something and asked why the person is doing it that way and they answer they have always doneit that way so t must be right. Even MSG mess nco. One would think after so many years he would know how to make ice tea for 100 men, But no he didnt.I told him to go find the book and look it up them bring it to me. Hedid and sure enough it does not say put sugar in the tea. I dont like sugared tea and had already looked. Then he started trying to tell me why he did it. all good reasons but not correct.

CPT William Jones - Yes, and also even if You have no access to a hard copy of a Regulation the majority of them are also available on line. It a person isn't sure about the answer then check the guidance a regulation or in some cases also a manual may contain. It's just not that complicated. You mention sugar in tea, well I can't use the sugar anyway, and many others can't as well. That is an additive, NOT a recommended ingredient.

Let them have their delusions. They will be better prepared when the first attempt to mess with NCOs after they become 0-1's

MAJ Donald Zlotnik - Correct. their rank is only over other cadets, they are students only and learning what they need to for the even they actually in the future become Officers. Seems that is a point that needed to be driven home to some of them.

MAJ Donald Zlotnik - many, if not most, cadets are in the SMP and are members of the guard/reserves with a rank of anywhere from E1-E5 so cadets do outrank some people serving in the military. In my 20 years in the guard/reserves I never saw a cadet who wasn't at least an E3.

Academy cadet/midshipmen pay is dictated by Congress. It's not technically pay, but a stipend for "fun" money and expenses. Cadets are required to buy their uniforms, books and mandated fees/services during their four years. Academies allows cadets access to certain levels of cash per month. In my case, from 1980-1984, I was "paid" about $5k/year with accessible cash of $50/month 1st semester increasing to $250/month during my last year. Out of about $23K for four years, I had about $1500 left over to take with me.

My daughter is just finishing 4 years of ROTC scholarship. The first two years were at Georgia Military College. While there she got a "stipend" of $225 a month from the Army ROTC program, a clothing and book allowance of about $1,200 a year from the Army ROTC, and earned about $300 a month as E-5 drill pay from the GA National Guard which she was required to join to get the GMC scholarship (which covered all of her expenses for the first two years of college). She was commissioned a 2LT after two years, upon junion college graduation, now gets about $450 a month in drill pay from the Army Reserve Quartermaster unit where whe is a platoon leader. She also gets $5,000 per semester "room and board" payment from the Army ROTC command for her junior and senior years, plus full Pell Grant and a discount from the college for being military. She is being promoted to 1LT in December in the Army Reserve - before graduation next May. So now she will be drawing drill and active pay as an O-2 over 3 years.

LTJG Richard Bruce - When I was stationed at West Point in the late 80s, I worked in the Fishbowl in Thayer Hall. I was a blue coat by day and gold coat when time permitted. We ran cadet pay stubs. Yes, we laughed like mad seeing it line up to the left at a good tally and then the right and 'no wonder they use credit cards at the PX for gum'. It truly was a stipend for fun money - haircuts and boot polish, I suspect.

I disagree Sir. A time honored military tradition is the “First salute”, upon commissioning. It is often part of the ceremony itself. Cadets or Officer Candidates are not officers simply potential officers and saluting them is not proper.

I certainly respect your knowledge of the applicable AR. Equal respect due to prior service members who choose to further their education and military career. Having said that, this is the most boneheaded and degrading decision. Since eliminated SPC-5s and up. The idea that JR enlisted off a years deployment owes a cadet off a years frat party anything but human respect, might be part of why morale remains so low.

Yep, and fall they would. Right down a ladder, accidentally of course. They may be still going to school and out for a joy ride with the REAL NAVY, but if my ass is on the line, screw them.

AR600-20 does provide a 3rd Lt, for purpose of on the job training for Cadets training to be commissioned officers but despite that doesn't give them authority over NCOs within the unit chain of command. In a chain of progression , if one in authority above them advance, they will NOT but an NCO actually might depending on where He falls in the unit's structure. Within normal Cadet training they aren't entitled to a salute except by lower ranking Cadets, in this formal training they would wear the insignia however not of a Cadet that of a 2nd Lt but be classified a 3rd Lt which is NOT a commissioned Officer although salutes as part of the training is not out of order. Cadet Officer rank insignia for example such disc and diamonds, a salute is never required or should even be expected except from lower ranking Cadets. I have saluted third Lt's in that capacity but NOT regular Cadets. As a prior Cadet officer at one point I've had enlisted people salute me as they weren't sure what to do, they didn't have to of course which I already understood. I just returned the salute to show them a mutual respect but in My vision it was Me saluting them out of respect for their service. I've saluted foreign enlisted people before as I wasn't sure what rank they were or if they were officers and figured I'd stay on the safe side. No harm done and they appeared to enjoy it.

As Cadets, the rank below an E-1. However during their First Class Summer - the one between their "junior" and "senior" years - they are sent to active Army units to play "real" soldier. They are given a temporary rank of 3LT (third lieutenant) to put them in the line-of-command for training purposes - so that any directions they give are technically direct orders. In the hierarchy, they fall above NCO's and below Warrants . They are given real positions within the staff, but always have a "minder" with them, in my direct experience usually a 1LT or CW2 whose MOS is in the area they have been assigned (i.e. an Intel-type if they are in the S-2). They seldom, if ever, have an opportunity to "order" anyone or anything, but have to have to have the "rank" in active training "just-in-case."

Yes, and on a Regional drill competition I had participated on a team with as a Cadet the inspector judges were 3rd Lt's, (wore what were 2Lt insignia of rank ) but were Cadets from the USAFA. We were also Cadets so it wasn't like being in the service per se and working with them but changed their status somewhat even if just for that event. I was aware what You said is factual however and in practice.

We had the "pleasure" of training ROTC cadets in their Junior Year Summer session in Comms.
I was a Full Bird Private. One day I was hauling a load of cadets in a duece and a half from one class to another. I decided to take a short cut through an exercise area with some nice dirt trails that were mainly dust. The duece had canvas top. As I maneuvered around the trails at a speed that was guaranteed to give a bumpy ride. The dust swirled around the back of the duece. Was I being an ass? Yes, sort of. But this is the Army. Suck it p.
When we got to the location, I dropped the tailgate. And the cadets came pouring out. All dusty, I mean dusty! I was actually surprised how bad. And now I had to wash that truck. I did not think this thru. Lol
The last cadet off, came up to me and got in my face and said. "When I get my bars, I am coming to find you!
I looked at him for a couple of seconds to see if reality had reached him yet. He just gave me that angry stare.
I told him when he got his bars I would be out of the Army $+))(ING his sister. And to get down and give me 20. After an extended staring match he did. Maybe he didn't know he outranked me
