In my opinion it should've never been named Mt McKinley. It should've been named as the local tribes had called Denali!

Agreed. The name change poses issues, but it never should have been changed from Denali anyways.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, aren't there bigger issues to consume the POTUS and his limited time?

SGT Ben Keen
SSG Warren Swan - I get that, but does it really take the President to name a mountain? I'm proud of the Congresswoman for taking the time to listen to her constituents and getting done what they want. But again, who names a mountain, a river, a lake, etc?

SGT Ben Keen - This wouldn't even be news if the president wasn't going to Alaska, and the mountain itself wasn't named for a former president from Ohio. Ohio representatives raised hell over the name change and made this an issue when it didn't need to be. But in the end, the government not nessicarily congress itself can name lands on federal land. If I read this wrong, please correct me.

It's not the President who renamed it, it's the Secretary of Interior. They just asked to time it with his visit.

SFC Mark Merino but he is using is AF1 and other resources to get there to make the announcement and just look at his carbon footprint.

No, and I don't believe the POTUS has the authority to rename the mountain that was named by an act of Congress.

SGT Efaw (Mick) G., we disagree. The Secretary of the Interior cannot void a law passed by congress regardless of the nature of the law.

SGT James Elphick
Capt Seid Waddell what about the state of Alaska, do they have a say in this? Because according to their state law the mountain has been named Denali since 1975. And their representatives in Congress have been trying to have it changed since then

SGT James Elphick, SGT Efaw (Mick) G., it appears that it will be up to congress and the courts to sort this out.

Show many any act of Congress naming it "McKinley" and you will at least have a logical point of view to argue from. I was unable to find one.

It was Probably Denali before any white guy ever set foot in Alaska.
If that's what they wanted, then that's what it's name should be.

Very interesting article that sheds a little light. This really had nothing at all to do with Obama.

The tortured Denali vs. McKinley backstory
The backstorybehind the decision to officially rename North America’s tallest mountain is the latest testament of the painfully slow sausage making that happens in the hallowed halls ofthe nation's Capitol.

SSgt Alex Robinson Why? That is the real question - he is just making people mad with some of the stupid decisions that he is making. If he has a staff that is supposed to be vetting these decisions then he needs to fire them! Just my opinion! Quit changing historical sites!

SSgt Alex Robinson I think if the people of the state of Alaska wanted to change the name of this mountain they should have taken care of it internally. If they're happy, I'm happy. What bothers me is that it seems to appear that it was mandated. I'm not sure why it would have taken an Executive order to accomplish this. Regarding why this happened it seems there is a trend with this Administration to accomplish as many "firsts" as possible.

I agree with the name change. The locals have called it Denali si that is what it is known by to them anyway.
