Most members of the class of 1837 fought in both the FL Indian War 1837 to 1838 and the Mexican War. Many died before the Civil War and several were killed in the Civil War. Several were wounded in combat.
Most of those who fought in the Civil war fought for the Union but some fought for the confederacy.

LTC Stephen F. I did not know the Generals were part of the class of 1837 USMA, what a rich tradition and a historical part of military heritage. Sweet indeed!

Most of the generals who fought for the north and south graduated from West Point SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Lee graduated in 1829 and Pickett graduated in 1846 with most in between. Many fought side-by-side in the Florida Indian War from 1837 to 1838 and in the Mexican war.
I am trying to go though my copy of the register of graduates and extract the information and translate the shorthand for each class. My plan is to work back to 1829 when Lee graduated and then move from 1840 on up on class at a time over the next month.

Most of the general officers in the Civil War graduated from West Point LCpl Mark Lefler. Many of them fought side-by-side in the Florida Indian War of 1837-1838 and in the Mexican war.
Robert E. Lee graduated in the West Point class of 1829
William T. Sherman graduated in the West Point class of 1842 as graduate number 1022.
James Longstreet graduated in the West Point class of 1842 as graduate number 1164.
Ulysses S. Grant graduated in the West Point class of 1843 as graduate number 1187.
George Picket graduated last in the class of 1846 as graduate number 1330.
I have already posted the USMA graduates of 1839 and 1838 who fought in the Civil War in separate questions. It takes time for me to look through my register of graduates and translate some of the information so that it makes sense.

I was interested to learn that one future CSA officer served as one of the highest officers at West Point. William Henry Talbott Walker served as Commandant of Cadets USMA 1854 – 1856.
Two graduates of this class have permanent monuments erected in their honor: West Point a monument made of a cannon captured by his Corps honors MG John Sedgewick; Gettysburg monument marks the spot where BG (CSA) Lewis Addison Armistead fell at Gettysburg.
Pictured: Statue of a soldier is MG John Sedgewick at West Point; Stone honors CSA BG Lewis Addison Armistead and a Union MG Winfield S. Hancock who both were killed at Gettysburg; The column monument is Battle Monument at West Point.
