In the 2 years i have been in i feel like the army as a whole is getting soft and weaker and i havent been in that long and i see it... i hear stories from Senior NCO's telling me about old army and at least back than it seemed like there was more order and discipline and you did more army stuff now it seems like they push paper work and discipline is lacking.... i would like to see even drill sergeants get a little harder in you face i thought basic was a lil weak input on this topic... I encourage Senior Leaders that know old army and the army today to put input into this...

I've been out 24 years.  No "old soldiers" in the Army today knows what the "old days" were like, any more than I remember what they were like for the Korean War vets.  So, when you hear that crap, think of it like the stories your grandma tells you about how hard she had it when she had to walk to school 3 miles each way, barefooted, through the snow and uphill both ways.  When I came in I had never heard of a stress fracture.  When I became a Drill Sergeant 10 yeras later, fully 20% of the recruits were getting stress fractures.  We had to address that.  Things change.  Get used to it and try to make the best of it you can.  Be a positive influence, not a negative influence.

BTW, we seemed to have made it this far, so don't give up now. I suggest you read the first two or three chapters of "1776," a book by David McCullough, and see how bad the old soldiers had it with the Army of the day in the battle with the British for Boston. You'll love the Army of today.

Having Retired From Employment In Our Schools,
I'd Suggest It Be Kept "As Is"
Because If The Path Is Changed, They'll Get Lost & Never Be Seen Again.

We need to retain the ideals of whatever our version of "Old Army" was. Technology does not and can not replace basic soldiering even for us techno geeks.

No one will ever win a war by Googling for their country.

Far too many things have been done to the Army for the sake of political correctness or due to "our society" being so much smarter......What we have done is create a generation of wussified Soldiers for the most part that bitch and moan over trivial shit and more time is spent on EO/SHARP/Suicide Prevention classes than training to defeat the enemy. Some things should never have been changed..ie. standards of physical fitness required to be able to pass BCT, etc.....no, shined boots and pressed uniforms didn't equate to good leadership, but it was a start.

Things change.  Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but they never change back to the way they were.  I came in in January 1971, start of the VOLAR Army.  Basic training at Ft. Polk, but we rode everywhere we went and no 6x6x6's, and longer hair.

William, our whole society has gotten wussified! Many expect everything on a silver platter and don't have to work for it. Our youth are really taught that more now then ever!

"How come Little Johnny doesn't get to play ball much, he deserves to?" Why does he deserve to?

"We don't keep score, we don't want the kids to worry about competing!" What??? Life is about competition, you don't deserve the job or position just because you think you do or your parents think you do....

"Betty deserves to be a cheerleader!" Why, I was raised to earn everything I have, to work hard and strive for higher goals. Not to sit on my ass and expect it to be given to me! But many in society these days do!!!!!!

Thomas, I couldn't agree more with your sentiments, our society has gone so far off the rails in ensuring that no ones feelings get hurt at an early age that children have no real sense of what the world is like and can not handle it when they are faced with it!!

in a lot of aspects it needs to go back to Heavy conflict with NBC. I keep hearing from military leaders that those days are over (which we have heard so often in the past and found out different) But the enemies we face today either have the same capabilities as we do or are acquiring them. Look at ISIL military training and tactics heavy armor ect... we are good at light fighting in urban areas but now we need to refocus our training efforts to meet any enemy on any terrain
