Hand of god
What are the best arguments for or against the existence of God?

I mean an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, omnibenevolent Supreme Being -- the eternally and necessarily extant Creator of the universe.

Atheists, Theists, Agnostics, Polytheists, Pantheists and anyone else are all welcome to weigh in!
I'm not asking what you believe, I'm asking about the best arguments for or against the existence of God.

To clarify omnibenevolence, I mean simply 'perfect goodness,' not "the quality of being kind and generous towards everyone and everything." CH (CPT) (Join to see)

Before I answe can I ask why? Why do you want to know? If it is to strengthen your belief in God I'm all for it but if it is to cause a descussion of which two parties do not hold the same absolute then why even talk about it?

Well, probably because there is a huge issue with the absolutes. Getting everyone to believe the earth was not flat was to benefit the entirety of the human race. Getting humans to ditch their absolutist ideology by talking things out logically is truly for the benefit of the species. How else are we going to keep progressing if we don't keep asking why? and then discarding the deeply held beliefs about those questions and figuring it out for real.

Honestly, PO2 (Join to see), I posted this question because I thought it would make an engaging debate on RP. No one's going to change my mind, and I don't really expect to change anyone else's mind. Changing the debators' minds is not generally the purpose of a debate.

I just enjoy intellectually stimulating discussions.

The problem with trying to have a discussion about it is that the views are so imposing in there except no absolutes therefore to have a discussion is usually ends up in a bunch of name calling. I hate it when people do that

Yes and no. It is up to the individual to answer that question. For me, yes. For the guy next to me - probably not. Is there a higher power - there has to be for I would hate for the most intelligent beings on earth to be us very flawed humans.

I once got into a debate with my father about religion and told him that Christianity was no different than ancient mythology. Of course he hit the roof until he heard me out. Every faith to include mythology all had a supreme being - all had lesser gods and demi gods - and all had tales to explain how nature and life came to be. These tales are laid out in the books of the Bible, the Koran, etc. Ancient man had to come up with an explanation for thunder and so on.

I digress - yes there is a higher power.

OK, well let me put it to you this way. You apply a much higher standard of "actual scientific evidence" for anything critical of evolution, than you do for anything in favor of it.

If the situations were reversed, and it was intelligent design advocates who were making impossible claims about the supposed science involving origins, this wouldn't even be a debate. But it's not intelligent design advocates making impossible claims, it's the evolution advocates.

We intelligent design guys look what is known about life and take it at face value -- it is complex, and operates in accordance with its internal instructions. You evolution guys draw impossible conclusions about how lightning created a soft cuddly nurturing environment in a hypothetical chemical mixture allowing the coming together of disparate odd bits to become a living, replicating thing. And you believe it, even though the alternative is far more scientifically sound, simply because you don't like the implications of it.

Science does not support the fantasy you believe. The belief in evolution is the only thing that compels anyone to hypothesize all that stuff. That is not following science, that is twisting science.

The lord jesus chist spirit
Well, I can only offer this photo taken by me while we were updating our family board, I will let you see the picture and judge for yourself, any explanations are welcome, and we have NO picture in our house like that where it could have been a reflection of. My Wife & I have taken the picture to a Photo Specialist, and they have said that it is NO Overlap of another picture, that the picture taken is real and everything on it is legit, they covered every pixel on that picture and could not find any pixel out of place. We since have decided to take this as a Blessing, and have given thanks for the honor of this spiritual visit by the King, our Lord Jesus Christ on the most Holiest of nights, Christmas Eve.....

I for one, still have a hard time understanding why we get into such topics here. For the most part these discussions turn ugly and become full of more hate and anger than anything else. I'm not saying this thread has of that going on, I'm just saying in general.

I feel that when it comes to faith and the ideas of a higher power, we as people ruin the idea. We as people shut people out or turn a cold shoulder to those that believe as we do. We as people will use the words of our faith to fight against others but at the same time ignore some of the same lessons written in our faith.

Personally, I have love/hate relationship with faith. I have my faith and feel that others should maintain their faith as they see fit. I just don't feel this is exactly the right venue to express such heartfelt and personal views.

Keen, I totally agree with you that this topic is not appropriate for RP. Since so many insist on having it, then I will chime in. Chrisitanity and Islam together are the mother lode of bad ideas, and like most bad ideas that have real influence over our society and public policy, just be ridiculed without mercy until belief in them has gone the way of belief in Thor. The truth is christians have managed to find a way to not believe in over 10 thousand other gods worshiped around the world. They are not only 1 god away from being atheists.

In my opinion God does exist. I grew up Catholic, not strict and not going to Catholic schools, but for me its a lifelong learned experience.
When I was active some people used to joke me about how can I curse, drink and chase after women in all the foreign ports and still say I am religious. I told them that God knows we are not perfect and He only wants us to live and learn and to lead overall good lives. God knows we will make mistakes, its what we learn from those mistakes and how it shapes our lives that is most important.
I had a DIVO and MCPO who made snide remarks when I told them I was going to the 0900 church service during our deployment right after 9/11. It was kind of disturbing that a CWO3 and MCPO felt the need to belittle my belief in God, but I realized that its their way of thinking so that's on them.
But I did find it almost amusing that once we deployed right after 9/11, it was our normal deployment schedule, that instead of 30 - 40 people attending service quite often there was over 100 people in attendance. Guess people find God in their own time and needs.
I attend church most every Sunday and Christmas eve and Easter masses. Its hard to explain but I feel good after being in church.
I know a lot of people don't believe in God, but its up to them to believe or not, I will never force anyone to believe in something they don't see the need to believe in.

In my past military experiences I have known what it feels like to loose conscience due to injuries and to awaken by a soft light floating above my body then lead by the light to stand before two beings surrounded by light then told it was not my time but to go back and Teach Love and Show Love or to stay. I choose to return but also choosed not to Teach Love nor Show Love. Ten years later I had a similar and once again received the same message which lead me to start to change my behavior however not fully change, but in the meantime I managed to survive earthquakes, race riots and in my last deployment in 2008 survived a night time motor rocket attack, I saw the rocket motor light coming directly at me, I dove to the left side hit a wall and knew I was about to die, but instead time slowed down the rocket motor turned into a halo which illuminated a being dressed in a all black floating gown it was an Angel dressed in black and just at the rocket was to hit my location it made a sharp vertical turn up and went over my head. I lost conscience but woke up and staggered away, in 2009 I was diagnosed with the side effects of a mild TBI and lost 10 years of memories and knowledge. Then in 2013, while by my two year old grandson was dying from brain cancer I made a joke that we need more people praying for my grandson 5 minutes later I received a a texts from my unit Chaplains Christian and Jewish, then emails from representatives of the Rotary Club who informed me that Muslims in Jalalalabad Afghanistan were praying for my grandson. Days later as my grandson was dying he was visited by all Christians denominations , Catholics, Buddhist, Jehovah Witness, Jews, Muslims, Gays, Lesbians, Straights, all came to pray by his bedside. So to answer you yes There is a God, that Loves all of us and does not discriminate and most importantly I have learned to Show Love and Teach Love.

Hunter on the issue of procreation there is some logic to what Manual said if you think about the fact that with animals they are driven to reproduce which is what we call going in heat. Humans on the other hand have Free Will and have the ability to choose not to have children yet when Lust takes control they loose there Free Will and end up procreating. So in a matter of looking at it God out smarted humans even with humans superior intelligence; they are still directed to reproduce. How is that for a Superior Intelligence over humans; therefore Manual was right, vulgar but right.

1LT, I am surprised by your Native knowledge, Coyote is my Spirit Guide, He visit in dreams and has visited me while deployed he showed up, there were soldiers that were surprised by seen a lone Coyote during some missions and in Latin America showed up when things were bad. My father was full blood Native and my Mother spoke the Mayan language. I will admit to having a Wiley Coyote doll that rode my vehicles in most of my missions. He now stand on top of my desk.

Nick, or you can get injured, or feel the energy blast from rockets mortar attacks, and get hit on the head and in each three separate incident continue to see the same thing which caused this man to begin to see what many do not and to believe. Now how many want to experience a painful death three times; I now live with residual effects of mild TBI, all back disk herniated, pinched lumbar 4 nerve, and damaged right knee and having to take pain killers and sleep meds, but I am alive. So YES David God exist.

Nick, sorry that you see as an argument based on emotion, to me is logical to say do not do what I did because it took experiencing pain and death for me to see. Which means to use science to prove God you have to come up with a good test my three times experience is a good test but who in their right mind would be as foolish as I. So here is the logic want to learn my my experience or experience your own, it is your choice?

Nick, I see where you are coming from, but my TBI mind chooses to use practical logic for a subject that does not fit the perimeters of scientific study and the rules of logic/critical thinking are reduce to acceptance by faith. However for those with shared experience (death) logic/reasoning expends to a another level one of knowing. Unfortunately we are then seen and judged by those that have never shared that experience and fall into the fallacy of being In the Land of the Blind the One Eyed Man is King.

Is there a God/s? That question has been at the core of human existence from the dawn of self consciousness to now.

i answered this before in another post but always toss my 2 cents in. I agree with some of the other people who posted on this issue.

I believe in God.
I believe God is omnipotent (The Alpha and the Omega).
I believe that God is everything. (God Sees all time as one thing. Good and Evil are both from God)
I do not believe God can be understood by humans as it is beyond our scope of knowledge and will always be.
I believe that Faith is powerful and God does have an effect in every ones lives. Do I understand Why? No.

Why I may not know why of a lot of things, it doesn't stop them from happening.

Robert, I agree with much of what you have written. However, I strongly disagree with God is everything that is pantheism. I would concur if you meant to write that God is the author of all that exists, has existed or will exists and has, is and upholding it all.
We will never fully comprehend God; but, we can understand what He has revealed to us in His word as He reveals it to us over time. One of the marvelous things about the written word of God is that you can read it over and over again and because it is a living word you find it meets your needs at deeper and deeper levels each time.

Actually you are correct. I don't believe in Pantheism, as in that the universe and Divinity are the same. I do believe that God is Divinity and the Universe but the Universe and Divinity are separate. I think that is the best explanation I can give. hard to explain something you don't quite understand yourself LOL.

As for the Bible and the word of God. While the Bible makes some excellent points and there are parts that I follow like Love God, Love Others. It was still penned by Humans. And with in that I believe human emotions and wants and needs have seeped into the writings, God inspired or not. To many in this world have used the words of all the holy scriptures of all the religions as a tool to hurt, main, and control others. To me that shows there is something wrong.

While I have never had a problem with any religion, I feel God has pointed me into a direction that is not parallel to Christianity or any other religion. But I still holds the bibles words to my heart. I love when I can, I always treat others with respect, and try with all my might to be a good soul on this planet. Only God knows what is at the end of the path I am following. Because I can honestly say I was never expecting to be here in the first place, but will make the best of it no matter what.
