Government Credit Card for every Soldier, good idea or bad idea?
I am currently in my second command. I have had issues with ranks from E4-E6 with being delinquent. First issue is many Soldiers utilize it for food, which is acceptable, BUT.....if they do not remember to transfer funds over in DTS to pay off the card they end up with a bill that they may or may not pay off. Or if DTS voucher is not completed fast enough or paid in time they get late charges. That is $29 each month after the first 30 days and then $80 fee when it goes to collections. So if you pay off the card late but refuse to pay the late fee (and I have had this happen a few times by NCOs) the late fees add up and then the $80 debt collection fee til you are paying $500 for a $29 fee you refused to pay for.
But overall it is just a small handful. About 5 at a time, though that may be because not everyone is traveling.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Sounds like it is from experience and that you were not traveling often. They are supposed to send you a new card when it comes up to expire.
Do you also have to turn those on and off depending on when you are traveling? We do that in the 412 TEC for TPUs. That is a hassle, but helps prevent misuse during the month as well.
I have seen failures on both sides, both with the service member and on the program coordinator/travel office side. Kids think that they can get away with using the card for stupid things that have nothing to do with official travel, then carry a balance on the card so they pop a red flag. I have had to fight with the Personnel Office because they want to come down on a Sailor for carrying a balance on their card. Not paying attention to the fact that the Sailor submitted their travel claim within the required 5 days of completion of travel, but the Personnel Office/Travel Office has not approved or dealt with the travel claim for over 30 days.
