Happy Veter... Hold On. Did I just catch a "poser?"

Every Veterans Day, I scour FaceBook to give nod to those who have served. Usually, I leave a "like" vote or a flowery comment. But, this afternoon I catch this. I did a double-take and said to myself something's not right. The pic is posted on one of my friend's page. Two part question: 1.) What's wrong about this pic? and 2.) Any suggestions on how to address this? I smell a rat. But, I thought I'd turn this over to the crowd before I burn a friend. If it helps guide your comments, the photo is actually the spouse of my friend. Photo would have been taken in the early to mid-90's. Fire away...

Doesn't everyone have a picture like that of themselves. Cool beret and field scarf, bandoleers wrapped around you when you are posing with a magazine fed weapon and that 20 round mag too. Yikes. Someone else mentioned it. It looks like a Red Dawn promo picture or something.

Capt Mark Strobl - The guy in the picture is obviously an idiot. Anybody with any sense at all can tell that from the picture.
My opinion/recommendation, just ignore it. Not worth possibly jeopardizing a friendship over.
If I decided to say anything at all about it to her, I would say something like "was your husband dressing up for a Halloween/costume party or something?" ... If she asked why you asked, I would tell her that the picture is obviously a satire of someone in the military and that no real military member would pose like that.

Agreed, COL Jean (John) F. B.. It's not worth jeopardizing the friendship. This was posted in a montage of other legitimate vets' photos. Needless to say, it jumped out at me. Thank you.

Capt Mark Strobl, That is my problem too with the guy I'm trying to find out about. My friend and the Ranger guy are friends. I think if I find out he's a poser or embellisher, I'll just let that satisfy my curiosity. If I said something it might ruin three friendships.

Was this maybe one of those "Ole Tyme Photo" deals?
They dress you in their image of soldier/cowboy(whatever) with available props and click click.

MSgt Daniel Attilio, well. that would be a definite benefit of the doubt. Thanks for your input. S/F.

Capt Mark Strobl - Followed that train of thought because the ensemble is horribly assembled. I did one of these a while back but I was never in the Confederate Army and the sword they had on hand was actually a USMC NCO sword. Just a pic and had a good time during the shoot with wife and parents also all garbed up. This was Branson MO but did similar shoot as cowboy at Old Tucson Studios in AZ.

Capt Mark Strobl, Ugh well let's see. What's up with the hair, the red neckerchief, the bandolier with blanks, the beret? There no patches on his uniform, which was probably bought at a surplus store. What's up with that background.
If you want to find out more, you will need his/her name, age, place of residence (state and city), and you can send this information to: [login to see] , Tell Mary who you are and I gave you this email address. I just sent her a request to see if she can find out anything about my suspected embellisher. It might take days, weeks or months, but she will reply and let you know one way or another.

Yes, SGT (Join to see). Lots of problems here. For now, I'm am just going to handle this "in house." After all, it is the wife of one of my friends. Just stunned. Sorta like finding out the wife of your buddy is cheating. How big do I want to make this? As for now, I'm just going to say something like, "Hey, saw the pic on FaceBook. Didn't know your wife served." I'll see where it goes from there. Appreciate the feed-back.

Capt Mark Strobl, My daughter is on FB and she just sent me. Some pics and such from his wife's FB page. I think mine is an embellisher. That's how I'm going to handle it too. Just between me and RP. Thank you.

I think the best way to approach this would be through a Facebook message. If they, she and her husband, are good friends of yours then I wouldn't call her out in a response that everyone on FB can see. She's wrong for taking and posting the photo, but if you value the friendship I would not address it publically.

I went ballistic on a poser once not too long ago and I regret it. Simply post on this pic, what exactly is this. Let them tell you the story. With you being either currently serving or a veteran, you will know what they are telling you to be true or not. If it is BS, simply state as much privately and remind them about Stolen Valor

Is that an M16A2 (forward assist) with A1 Handguards (triangle) and a 20 rd mag? Since the chamber is open, and the bolt is halfway to the rear, it doesn't look like a a rubber rifle.
Based on the Ascot, my first guess would have been AF(J)ROTC especially with the lack of visible rank insignia. I don't know beret flashes, but I'm sure there are others here who could rattle them off quick just on sight.

OMG I remember these pics. At Lackland AFB back in the 90s. I believe the photo shop was at the old Skylark received center. The just graduated basic troops that were going to the Security Police School would go gets these made. Then they go get that ugly bomber jacket with patches. LOL thanks for the flash back.
