Once upon a time federal agencies (particularly law enforcement and intelligence agencies) sought out and fired LGBT personnel due to the risk they could be blackmailed into compromising their integrity. Now LGBT applicants get preferential consideration for hiring.

"LGBT applicants get preferential consideration for hiring" I see that the article's title makes it click bate, but seriously, putting quotas on jobs that require a high degree of professionalism and skill should not go to any one person due to their < insert diverse trait > here. How about hiring the best person for the job?

And sometimes the best person for the job may be one who blends in, but not James Bond! The days of hiring Sean Connery and expecting HIM to infiltrate the deepest darkest reaches of a Harem in Marrakesh are long gone. It may have worked in he movie Ishtar, but real life is different. If the CIA needs to have recruits that fit in in a place that is like Fire Island, but overseas, then recruit the right people; the best person who "fits" the job.

Cpl (Join to see) Did you read the article? I think the title is somewhat misleading. I like the idea of hiring "the best person for the job" above all others.

hiring the best person for the job is a really good idea in may ways, but how do you determine that? Grades in School? Tests? Measures of ability? I speak very good German and can get by anywhere in the area in and around Dusseldorf easily and even thought I could pass for a local since I was born there. But having lived in the USA for over 66 years, my mother often pointed out that I spoke German with an American Accent. I would not be the best person to work as a CIA operative in Germany and try to convince others I was German, without massive retraining. Additionally I would not get along well working as a gay German Bartender in Berlin, for two reasons now. Not gay either.

So, actually, I did read the article and think my comments supported the idea of the article. It stated that, “We will continue to enrich our workforce by targeting diverse communities across the United States to meet our talent needs, with dedicated programs for citizens of African, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Native American descent; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals; Persons with Disabilities; Veterans; and Women.” Nowhere in there does it say that James will be the only one hired anymore; oh wait that was MI6.

I think it is great. The Reason that they could be Blackmailed was that it was "Illegal" at the time and the Social Stigma Involved. As a Military Man I come from the Cryptologic Community, ever hear of Alan Turing? One of the Greatest Cryptologists ever and Father of the Computer Age. Committed Suicide after an arrest for "Lewd" (Homosexual) Behavior. Great Loss to the world. In my Technical World (yes even in the Military back in the day) Plenty of Gays. Now Transgender does throw me off yes even with my words still having trouble adjusting but that is my Problem not theirs. I remember getting in an argument with a "Lady" who I was trying to give a Parking Ticket too. Got back to dispatch and discussed it with my coworkers about the Onry Trans I had to deal with. They laughed and said "So you met the Senior Chief". Huh What! The Individual I was ticketing was a Retired Male Navy Senior Chief that had the Surgery after he Retired.

Now if you are for traditional marriage you are a hater. And if you don't want to participate in it you a vilified and protesters show up at your place of business. And you get outrages fines for the pain and suffering you caused. And I heard of one judge forcing them to classes on homosexuality.

Without giving away any secrets, I always liked Gust Avrakotos (b 1/14/38 - d 12/1/2006) CIA Case Officer line in the film Charlie Wilson's War. Maybe it would be a good idea to have spies who could speak the same language as the people they're fuckin spying on? Frankly, I believe we should recruit more first generation immigrants who have contacts, experience, and friends in the target cultures. And for certain purposes for certain predilections may lend themselves to performance in particular sex roles required for specific targets - where it is otherwise difficult to play authentic LGBT role over time for covert operations. The Agency operations division was at one time populated by too many pasty white men and tanned knuckle draggers who never effectively blended in abroad. It desperately needed more diversity in recruitment - reflecting current and predicted operational needs - not domestic population and political correctness.

As the diversity of the world increases so must the diversity of our spies. Sean Connery is no longer the one man for all situations and it is time for our CIA and even FBI (see Edgar spin) to realize it. Homeland is doing a much better job and so are the armed forces - BY DIRECTION.
