How does everyone feel about PFC Bergdahl? How does one get meritoriously promoted for being a deserter?

Im not sure we are getting the whole story. I mean, how does someone just walk off of the installation with a cantene and compass? doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me.

Really? This question is absolutely shocking! that's something I'd have to explain to my Mother :(

First of all, just because you don't have a full understanding of what happened doesn't mean everyone is in the same boat. And since you want me to explain it to you, they were on an OP which was hasty, and in the middle of jack and shit. It was essentially an improved patrol base, manned only by a Platoon. It's about as hard to walk off as it would be for you to get up and go to the bathroom.

It was explained to me once, and I could be fuzzy on remembering so you'll have to fact check it.
While he was in captivity (wether by his own design or not) while considered a MIA/POW he was promoted in line with his peers. Its based on where he would be if he were an average soldier. I had a training NCO once that had been accused of rape while in Germany and got convicted and did 12 years in prison.
The female eventually recanted her story and admitted that she had lied because her parents had found out and were going to disown her so she claimed rape. The NCO had went in a SPC and came out a SFC, that's how he explained it, that he was promoted as would have been his natural progression...but he could have been BSin me, but he wasn't lying about the whole prison thing. That much was true and verified.

In the early '90s, it was easy to do time for something you didn't do. The Army was so sensitive to sexual assault/sexual harassment, that a female only had to say something once and you were crucified for it. I saw several guys prosecuted on the word of a female that may or may not have been true.

When I went through orientation ( 2 weeks) in Germany I made friends with 3 class mates, 2 males and a female, we hung together at COB in a club in town until the female went hog wild and almost had sex with a local national on a pool table. I dropped contact with her because I found it unbecoming, she approached me a few days later going into class and I told her she was trouble and I was waiting on my promotion to E-5 and felt it better to just walk away from the whole thing, at no time was I disrespectful to her... 30 minutes into class she started bawling, ran out of the class and 30 minutes after that I was being escorted out of class by MP's and my new Plt Sgt. I was charged with sexual assault and attempted rape, I was floored, bewildered, crushed and in a daze.My commander tore my promotion papers up in front of me. In the end she claimed that the SSG conducting the investigation sexually assaulted her as well, and a check into her records showed that she had claimed that her drills had also sexually assaulted her, all charges were dropped I was promoted, but my Commander told me that he would never forget the way it all looked and I made a hell of an entrance to his unit...

He was 'meritoriously' promoted? Or promoted in line (average) with peers?

Is that why the D vote? I was not taking a pot shot at your stance, I am simply saying let the chips fall. Our system is far from perfect, but you have to believe that we have highly capable people who will get to the bottom of the story, those investigators will not just accept a BS story, that is why they are there. Then, when the chips fall, the real story will make it out and the opinions will be allowed to fly. Until then, we should really hold off on making those determinations...If that is not the reason for the D vote, then would appreciate knowing why. Love the site, love the back and forth. Stay safe.

SGT Welsh,
No one is claiming the White House by merely saying something.
At some level, merely a father being thankful for release of his son.
No one is suggesting the father has any other than best intentions.
Warmest Regards, Sandy

I don't think you should be meritoriously promoted for desertion. To be promoted to an NCO position you are supposed to show demonstrated leadership. The last time I checked desertion is not leadership. Even if he just went outside of the perimeter to get some "fresh air" and somehow got lost that shows a lack of leadership and common sense.

Untill all the facts rolled in, he was been carried on the roles as a POW. Most POW's are promoted based on Time in Service nd Time In Rank, since they can't go to school, etc. Now that all the facts are in, he's a frickin PV1 till appeal in over.

The worst display of leadership and lack of respect for the military by any commander in chief in the history of this country. Obama has the gull to trade 5 enemy combatants for 1 deserter. This was an open act of a traitor. He (Obama) then uses the claim that we leave no one behind and the opportunity was a very short window so he couldn't inform congress. What a crock of shit. We don't leave anyone behind my ass. What about an honorable soldier suffering from PTSD? Sgt. Tahmooressi who he absolutely refuses to do anything about. And this is supposedly from a "friendly" nation. I don't think there's any question whether he deserted or not. The entire event in my opinion will go down in history as the weakening of our armed forces. The Secretary of the Army, and the Senior Commanding General in the Army should resign for allowing it to happen. They are as guilty as the President. Bergdahl should be tired, convicted and executed for desertion in the face of the enemy, not to mention going over to the other side.

I feel this will be swept under the rug by BS PC liberal political hacks. It should not be. I am waiting to see the results, but I fear they will not be forthcoming. They will wait for the American attention span to wane. The trade was, without doubt, one of the stupidest moves I have ever seen.

I can't find anything that says he was meritoriously promoted.
That being said...I think he needs to be tried. And, if found convicted, punished to the FULL penalty of the UCMJ. Since his alleged desertion was during war time, the penalty would be death. If not found guilty, he should have to compete for promotion like everyone else.

im surprised at all the negative comments here about Bergdal. he isnt even in debriefing yet. this business of him being a deserter hasnt been proven yet. where is the military loyalty and professionalism here? give the man the benefit of the doubt at least until the facts are known.

Ahhh, I just looked up the different services General Orders or Sentry's Orders. The Navy and Marine Corps abide by 11 General Orders the Army and Air Force only have 3 so maybe Bergdahl did not violate his General Orders. I would think the Army has something about just walking away from you post and leaving your M-4 behind. If they do not have a problem with throwing away your M-4s I would like one. :-)

Until we know the facts everything you just said is speculation so for that reason i say stop passing judgement till we know the facts, he hasn't been debriefed yet. if he is guilty of desertion then he should get all penalties the USMJ allows. Shouldnt a man be considered innocent til proven guilty?
