Sgt Spencer Sikder , Data can be misrepresented and politicians use this fact to their advantage. I say this as a data scientist, people select data that support their premise and ignore data (sometimes hiding it) that does not.

Well said, LTC Strickland. In recent decades our industrious political leaders in Washington, DC have manipulated so much data, so often, that it is almost a given that the data is seriously corrupted. We used to be able to depend upon the FBI CIUS (Crime in the US) data, but who knows how infected that organization has become.

Two issues affect even answering this question:
1. The meaning of the Second Amendment.
2. The fact that a firearm is only an inert tool used by mankind.

One last comment. Every nation precedes their goal of dictatorship with firearm confiscation. That is often followed by genocide.

Sadly, the article you referenced describes some factors which may account for the reduction in violent crime, but it is mute on possible reasons for an increase in mass killings. That seems to be the topic on most people's minds these days. Now, why do pundits comment as though the opposite is true? They are opinion mongers and their product sells best in times of peril. A significant reduction in crime doesn't help them very much. So, they lie. Of course, that's just my opinion.

2 years ago, the FBI* redefined mass-murder (and mass-shooting) from 4+ killed (4+ injured) to 3+ killed (3+ injured). They effectively changed the measuring stick.

*the Legal Statute which the FBI (DOJ) uses changed, which defines Mass-Killing (aka Mass Murder).
