Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Pain retains. I learned all my knowledge quick when I was a boot and never talked back to my seniors unless I wanted to spend the night in the front leaning rest or writing essays or the million other stupid games that can be played that don't involve getting the shit beat out of you. Then again now the corps is soft now and so is the rest of the country. This generation will ruin the military

The young man is about to get a new outlook on life. I would have the hole platoon due is work and have him set down an is brothers due the work. They will see that doses not happen again.

Fan room consultations are still a thing. If the subordinate sailor is otherwise facing official action, he would probably prefer to "slip in the shower" over facing charges of insubordination.

LOR for insubordination. If further incidences, Article 15 and out the door. There is no room for his type of behavior. It disrupts morale and discipline and only serves to encourage others to adopt the same type of attitude.

Oh, young dummy, you're going to learn today!
Start with smoking the crap out of him. If he continues to be disrespectful, counsel him for it, get witness statements, and recommend UCMJ action.

Leave the formation at attention. Tell the E2 to return to quarters and pack his sea bag and report to personal for discharge. Dismiss the troops to their assignments. Escort the E2 to personal and assist with the paperwork. THAT is not what happens but it should . If subordinates won't follow their leaders you can't win. You don't need to spend the time to convince the E2 to do the right thing, they will put descent in the group and that can not be tolerated.

Back in the "OLD CORPS", I was an E-5 (Staff Sergeant), If that had happened to me, (in the Marine Corps the probability of such an event occurring was next to none.) that E-2 (PFC) would be grabbed by his stacking swivel, and pulled forward out of the group, to receive a severe discussion of his heredity, then given a few laps around the grinder until he realized that in the Corps, that sort of action is never permitted. He would also have been counseled by me on the proper way to do push ups for 10 - 15 minutes. It may possibly happen in the Corps, nowadays, but I doubt it. Sounds like a Dog face problem, and one that Marines never would experience!
